The night of the ball, I stood in front of a cracked mirror, the transmitter clutched in my hand. Felix had worked tirelessly, reprogramming it to project an image of elegance and mystery. My heart pounded as I activated it, watching my reflection shift and change.
The ragged clothes I wore disappeared, replaced by a stunning gown that shimmered in the dim light. My hair, usually a tangled mess, was now perfectly styled. The holographic image was flawless, transforming me into someone unrecognizable.
"You look incredible," Felix whispered, awe in his voice.
I smiled, tears of gratitude in my eyes. "Thank you, Felix. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Just promise me you'll be careful."
"I will."
With one last look at Felix, I stepped out into the night, my old life fading away with each step toward the Citadel. The streets were eerily quiet, the usual sounds of chaos replaced by an uneasy silence. The Regime had ensured that everyone knew about the ball, and only those deemed worthy were allowed to attend.
As I approached the Citadel, my heart raced with a mix of excitement and fear. The grand structure loomed above me, a stark contrast to the ruins of the city. The entrance was guarded by imposing enforcers, their expressions cold and unyielding.
"Name?" one of them demanded as I approached.
"Ella," I replied, my voice steady despite my nerves.
He glanced at a list, then nodded. "Proceed."
I stepped through the gates, the opulence of the Citadel taking my breath away. The grand hall was filled with people dressed in their finest attire, their laughter and chatter filling the air. It was a world I had only ever dreamed of, and now I was a part of it.
