Chapter 18

¤ Veronica ¤

The following days they spent it going to meetings and talking about Thena with Kai. Thawne didn't speak with her. Today the king had called them to a room called the basement. The room had red walls, black stone as floor and some chandeliers that gave light to the room.

The soldiers standing inside the basement and outside were looking ready for war. Veronica and Kai looked at each other. ' What's happening here?'

Kai shook his head. ' I don't know.'

She sees the claw marks on the walls as if someone or more had been trying to get out of this room. Then she heard a voice. The voice came from a nobleman that she knew she had seen before but couldn't remember who he was. She couldn't see his face, it was too dark where he was.

She could hear him begging for mercy from the king. The king gave the nobleman the answer by turning to his closest soldier, taking his sword and driving it in through the nobleman's heart.

Veronica gets chills at the sight she saw in front of her. The king signals for them to come forward.

'' One day it will be you who will represent Northa as its king. You will have enemies everywhere, you will have to make sure that they don't bring you down.''

Veronica blinks in chock. She hadn't expected the king to say that. It made her almost believe he meant it but she knows he doesn't. Not after the night he had beaten Kai and told him that he would die as soon as his youngest son gets older. He is lying right now to make sure that everybody believes that Kai will be the future king. Why?

Veronica interrupts the king as he wanted to say something. '' Who was the nobleman?''

The king turns his cold lifeless eyes on her. '' It was one of the rebels. The idiot thought that I wouldn't find out he colluded with Luna.''

She knows that she should be quiet and not speak more but she doesn't do that. '' Are you really sure that he was one of the rebels? Did he tell anything about Kaira? Did he tell you about who the leader of the rebels is?''

Kai tugs at her dress and Veronica realizes she has gone too far. It's none of her business to question the king's decision. She looks down on her knees.

'' Do you think that I kill people without having evidence Mareena.'' the king asks calmly.

Too calmly. She shakes her head.

'' He doesn't know anything about Kaira and about the leader...we got a name but he lied. Either he doesn't know the leader's name or he protected the leader.''

This time it's Kai who asks the king '' What name did he say?''

'' Elizabeth Aslanbey.''

Kai and Veronica look at each other confused. She had died with the royal family. She couldn't be the leader of the rebels. The rebels are probably saying it's her to make the king fear that he didn't kill them. Probably to give hope to the people.

Veronica and Kai leave the room. Thawne is standing outside and looking cold at her. '' The queen and princess Elise want to see you, my lady in the garden.''

'' See you later.'' she says and walks away.

When Veronica comes, she sees a table filled with a lot of wedding magazines. They were everywhere. She sat down, gave them a small smile and let them keep planning the wedding that is planned to happen next year.

One hour went with them fighting about which kind of flowers they want for the wedding. Veronica sighs. ' This will be a long day for me.'

It's fortunate that Veronica had decided a long time ago that she would never marry. ' You don't have to think about stupid things like flowers, or a dress!'
