🐧+🐿️: A Pair of Sneakers

HueningKai was so excited for Taehyun's birthday. Only 4 days were remaining.

"Tyunnie, what do you want from me?"
"Why would I want anything from you?"
"Your birthday is coming! I want to gift you something!"
Taehyun scoffed. "I don't want anything from you Hyuka. You are enough."
"Why are you so careless about yourself?" HueningKai pouted. "You know, I care about you, and I want to show you that."
"It's not something to show off. I mean- yes, somedays it's needed to show off but not to me. I know already you care enough for me."

Kai admired him deeply. They were in grade 9, but it seemed like Taehyun was much more mature than his age. He didn't like the fact that Taehyun didn't care much about himself. He believed that he was too nice to be in this world.

When Kai came back to his house, he was deeply in thought that what to gift him. He seemed perfect, even Kai believed that he would be perfect without anything, literally ANYTHING, like, even naked.
Kai threw himself on bed and blushed a lot at the thought.
"No! Stop thinking dirty! Think about the gift!" Kai slapped and thought to himself.

[FLASHBACK]
The group of 5 friends went to shopping. As always, HueningKai was sticked with Taehyun. It was cold in January.
"Warm clothes are done. What else?" Taehyun said.
"Let's go to shoes' shop!" One of the friends, Soobin said excitedly.

As they went to shoes' shop, Kai noticed how Taehyun was looking at a pair of red sneakers. He simply couldn't take his eyes off them.
"What are you looking at, Tyun?"
"Hm? O-oh, nothing! Did you choose what are you going to get?"
"Just tell me that you were looking at those red sneakers!" Kai pouted,"I'll make sure to give you that!"
"No!" Taehyun shuttered,"I don't want them. I m-mean- yes, maybe I want, I don't have that amount of money right now." He sighed.
"That's what I'm saying! I'll buy you those!"
"No! Just buy whatever you want for yourself, don't bother about me."

Kai couldn't express it, but he was slightly hurt by Taehyun's denial.
As if Taehyun didn't care about himself.
He wanted Taehyun to love himself.
He wanted Taehyun to notice his own feelings as well.

[PRESENT]
Then Kai was in front of that shoes' shop again. It was no longer that cold anymore, since it was February.

That red sneakers were still there.

This time, HueningKai bought that sneakers and took them home.
"I'll make Taehyun smile the brightest." He thought to himself.

It was d-day.
Kai made a lot of jokes which made everyone in the group laugh a lot. But he was eyeing Taehyun all the time. His smile was everything.

They celebrated his birthday on the rooftop of the school. Taehyun all the time was like- "Yahh thanks thanks, but y'all didn't have to do this" blah blah.
Suddenly Soobin pulled Kai's ears.
"Idiot! It's his birthday! When are you going to confess?" He whispered.
"Today. Only if my courage is that high." Kai whispered back.

Taehyun was side eyeing them. After the school, Taehyun was walking along with Kai.
"What you and Soobin hyung were talking about?"
"When?"
"The time you two whispered to each other." Taehyun seemed disturbed.
"O-oh. That's nothing! Really!" Kai seemed a bit uncomfortable.
"Hyuka, you know, we're best friends and you can't keep secrets like that." Taehyun sped up his walking.
"H-hey! Tyun, can we go to our house today?"
"Why?"
"I want to show you something." Kai couldn't say all of that.

In Kai's place, Taehyun was sitting on the sofas.
"What is it, Hyuka? You're taking so much time."
"Wait wait, a little more." Kai said from his bedroom.

"Here it is." Kai came back with a box.
"Is it a shoe?"
"Yes." Kai seemed a bit nervous.
"Why're you showing me shoes?"
"It's for you, pabo! Open it."
Taehyun looked at him in disbelief.
"Didn't I tell you not to get me some-"
Kai put his hands on Taehyun's mouth. "Just open it."
As Taehyun opened the box, he was even more shocked.
"Kai!!!" He hugged Kai tightly putting aside the box of red sneakers.
"You remembered those sneakers? You even bought them?"
"Of course I did! I did see so much love in your eyes that day. Are you happy?"
"I'm always happy with you Hyuka. Some mere sneakers can't describe it."

They were in that position for a while in silence, then Taehyun broke it.
"Umm..... Hyuka?" He almost whispered.
"Yes?"
"What do you think about me?"
"You're my best friend?"
"Would you believe me if I said...." Taehyun paused,"That I don't see you as a best friend?"

HueningKai's heart suddenly ached.
He pulled off from the hug.
"T-then, are we just normal friends? Weren't you the one who called me your best friend?" His tears are fighting to drop.
"No longer." Taehyun wiped Kai's cheek as a single tear dropped.
"But-"
"Hyuka, I love you. Like, romantically. I'm sorry-"

Kai suddenly hugged him, this time crying so much.
"Pabo! Why're you sorry? I don't see you as a best friend either. I love you too!"

Then, happily ever after!
