*Sonic's POV *
"Should I be concerned that I find my husband in bed with his best friend?" We both looked up to see Knuckles coming in through the window.
"Shut up, Knux." I rolled my eyes with a quiet chuckle. Knuckles sat down at the edge of the bed after he made sure the door was locked.
"Whats going on? Are you okay?" He asked, as much as Knuckles and I fought sometimes, he was still a very good friend and would make sure I was always okay. When Tails and him first started dating though, our friendship had taken a bad turn, he was always jealous that I was so close to Tails but not anymore.
"Not really." I sighed and sat up as Tails did as well and pecked Knuckles lips. I guess Knuckles still needed reassurance that he picked Knuckles and not me, not like me and Tails would ever be a thing, he's my little brother. Though he's not so little anymore.
"If it's about G.U.N. Aleena said she's trying to take care of it and you all can stay at the castle instead of here. She said it would be safer and they can't go inside royal grounds." Knuckles said calmly.
"No it's not that but thank you. We will probably go tonight then." I rubbed my face knowing we now needed to pack again.
"Then what's wrong?" Knuckles asked.
"Sonic doesn't know how to feel about Shadow being back." Tails explained.
"I would've punched him." Knuckles shrugged making my ears perk up at his crazy suggestion. "What? The idiot had Mephiles and Scourge telling him they would help him and he still decided to turn himself in, leaving you while you were still pregnant a day the twins at a very young age. You're not married to him, so you can technically leave him but you do have his kid so that makes it more complicated. Only solution is to beat him up."
"You're crazy." I chuckled and cleaned my tears. "I'm not going to do that." I shook my head.
"Well, I understand you feel the way you do. You were without him for 12 years but I also understand Shadow. If it would had been me, I would had done the same to protect my family, wouldn't you?" It was a shock when Knuckles said things like this. "You need to figure out how you feel about the situation before things get worse, maybe don't leave the kids out of this, they're old enough to understand. Shadow and you could use a break from each other now that you know he's alive."
"That's true, your mind was in a loop mourning the loss but now that he's back you could use the mental break to ground yourself and see how exactly you feel about all of this." Tails agreed with Knuckles and I slowly nodded, it wasn't a bad idea.
I hated the idea of bringing the kids into this. Was I stressing them out more with this? Would they understand? What if they hated me afterwards for breaking the family?
"I guess I can try that."
"Why's there a pillow on the floor?" Knuckles asked as he looked down.
"Shadow sleeps there."
"You sleep in the same bedroom?" Tails and Knuckles asked at the same time.
"Y-Yeah..." I rubbed my arm.
"Sonic... you really need the break." Tails sighed.
After a while of talking, we heard the front door open and they knew it was time for them to go. They went out through the windows and left, being careful not to be seen.
As soon as they were gone, there was a knock at my door which I stood up to answer just to see Shadow standing there. "Did they leave?" He asked.
"What?" I asked confused.
"Come on, Hedgehog. You know I'm not stupid. I told you I was going to make sure you all would be safe, I saw them going up through the window." My ears lowered, I had forgotten how protective Shadow was.
"Yeah. They just left." I answered. "Can you help the kids pack? We are going to be staying at the castle from now on." I turned and walked to the closet.
*Shadow's POV*
I reached for him as he turned then pulled myself back to stop myself. I nodded as my heart broke more.
"Sure." I said and was about to leave the room when Sonic called my name.
"Actually... Shadow." He said making me stop in my tracks and look back at him, he was folding a jacket then set it on the bed, not looking at me but that was nothing new. He hadn't looked me in the eyes since we got here a week ago.
"Yes?" I asked confused wondering what he was about to say or ask me.
"I think... it's best if we take a proper break, once we are at the castle, I'm going to tell the kids and make sure our schedules aren't the same so we don't bump into each other since the castle is big enough," My world turned upside down at his words but I couldn't say anything about it. "don't worry about the kids, they will be staying one day with you and the other with me, or how they please. I still don't know yet but I won't keep them from you."
"Okay..." I answered, I couldn't help but answer sternly, my wall going back up as in instinct. I didn't want to get hurt, it's why I never gave anyone a chance, I don't regret my time with Sonic, never will but it hurt to have lost him and yet being so close to him.
I walked out of the room without saying anything else and went to help the kids.
