There was no pyramid as Amelie stood in line with the other girls, all wearing neon pink ALDC shirts. Kenzie stood next to Holly and Sam and Colby stood on the end, Sam leaning on the wall slightly.
"So," Abby began as she walked back and forth. "This is it. Who's getting a solo at Nationals? You could all do one...but you're not."
"Aw, I was getting excited," Holly laughed.
"At Starbound Nationals, they have 13 and over, 12 and under. It'll be split. No one will be happy with my choices I'm sure."
"Elliana, you're doing a solo. Called Munich."
"Next, Kalani, yours is sophisticated. It's called Who Do You Think You Are?"
"Finally, Brynn. Yours is lyrical, called Winner Takes All."
Amelie frowned and looked at Nia and Kendall. They'd danced with Abby longest...why weren't they getting a solo? She looked over to Sam and Colby, who were both standing straighter and frowning, too.
"I think it's sad that the two girls who have actually trained here do not have solos," Holly said calmly.
"What is wrong with you!" Jill yelled.
"Elliana has multiple national titles, why would she not?" Yolanda argued.
"They didn't ask you, they're asking Miss Abby."
Yolanda glared at Amelie, whose head was titled slightly to the left. "Shut it."
"No."
"Kendall, you're not doing a solo because of your song. Do you need the media blast? And Nia, you're not doing one because you have a duet with Amelie."
Her eyes widened as she looked at Nia, who was grinning back.
"I have a mature group of just the elites. It's called Is There Still Hope?"
After group rehearsals, Nia and Amelie entered their duet practise.
"Your duet is titled Welcome to Wonderland," Abby told them. "Amelie, this is your last dance with me."
She nodded. It was true.
"I know you and Nia are very close, and this dance will reflect that. I want you both to put everything into it. As we all know, Sam will be leaving with you for a week or two, correct?"
Amelie nodded, smiling lightly at him.
"So, both him and Colby are in here helping. As Sam will be actually leaving, he'll be helping Amelie, and Colby - Nia."
They all nodded and Abby began to teach.
When they finished, the two 'portrayal officers' as Abby called them began to give the girls some tips. Nia picked Amelie up and lifted her upside down.
"Hey!" She protested.
"Alright girls, let's do a run through for me!" Abby called. The girls ran to their starting positions.
When they finished, Abby was crying a little. She hugged both girls. "You are both beautiful dancers. I'm so proud of you. You both bring everyone in and tell a story, that is the beauty of dance. You don't even have to say anything."
Amelie woke early to stretch and get ready. When she was, she hopped onto the bus to the venue. She chatted with Lilly, deciding their favourite dessert and other things. Their friendship was adorable. Kenzie handed them some cookies and they shared with Ellie.
Upon arrival, they rushed to get ready. The junior elites were first and so all the others went to watch in the audience.
Amelie cheered loudly for them as they went off. The girls danced so well and were able to portray something many others would associate with and remember. Then Amelie went backstage with Maesi, Lilly and Ellie.
"Soloists, get ready!"
Amelie watched as Ellie, Brynn and Kalani prepared. They were then rushed backstage.
Kalani and Brynn danced beautifully, and Amelie was sure they would place up high.
Then it was Ellie's turn.
Amelie was proud of one of her best friends as she went off. Nia took Amelie's hand and they rushed to get ready.
"Please welcome to the stage, Welcome to Wonderland!"
Amelie and Nia danced perfectly together. They sold the story and generally impressed everyone. Amelie knew it was her last dance at the ALDC so she put everything into it.
She came off crying in Nia's arms. Her dancing at the ALDC was over...it was officially over.
"Oh Amelie," Nia hugged her tightly. "It's okay."
Awards began. There was a lot of people on stage and a lot of great talent.
"Overall groups!"
Candy Apples Dance Centre placed fourth, to clearly Abby's pride.
"And our top overall group, Is There Still Hope!"
It went onto duo/trio.
Two duets from the same dance school placed one right after the other, to Amelie's immense surprise.
"And in first place...Amelie and Nia, Welcome to Wonderland!"
They jumped up and accepted the award. Amelie started crying again, Nia held her, and they took their photo. They sat back down while waiting for the national titles.
"Your new Little Miss Starbound...Elliana with Munich!"
Amelie cheered for Ellie as she accepted the award and bowed.
Luckily for them, the 2023 Nationals had been a clean sweep.

and that is season seven! wow, that's wild thank you to the author of starlight i knew i wanted to give amelie and nia a duet, but i read yours and loved welcome to wonderland, so thanks for the duet inspiration 😭
