Letter 2 of 7

Volantis - Essos

Queen Daenerys, or should I say dear aunt? Isn't that how I should address you? We are family, aren't we? I am taking care of her, I know it is what you would wish regardless of where she is or who she is with. The winter is very harsh; we don't know how we will get out of where we are because the city is locked down, people are being prevented from leaving or entering. There has been a major outbreak of an unknown illness; it is very similar to the flu but twice as deadly and dangerous.

I suspect Athena might be sick, but she doesn't want to show weakness. Aunt, your fiancée is stubborn; she is as stubborn as a wild horse. I have never seen someone so inflexible in decision-making. How do you put up with her? It is a sincere question.

Things in the city have been chaotic since you became queen. The common folk are excited because there has never been a ruler so close to ordinary people as you are. I am ashamed to admit that I have exploited this fact to rob some wealthy people to make money. Don't tell her; she wouldn't approve, but the money has to come from somewhere to buy food and medicine.

She is doing well now, within the limits of what is possible, she is okay.

Athena has even talked to a little bird about how she loved you. I know she doesn't like to show her feelings, but it's undeniable how much you are missed. She doesn't cry, but the eyes are the mirror of the soul, and her soul is shattered without you. Sometimes she doesn't react; she just lies there staring at the ceiling. You were her pillar in this crazy world.

Daenerys, I don't know if we will be able to return to the continent anytime soon. We are being followed and can never stay in one place for long. We haven't gathered enough resources for both of you to go to Westeros. I have told Athena that I don't mind staying behind, knowing she would come back for me when she could, but she is as soft as a rock and refuses to leave without me. According to her, friends never abandon friends; it is a matter of character, and abandoning friends is dishonorable.

Aunt, I have one request: if you managed to destroy and rebuild houses from scratch, convince my uncle Doran to let me use my mother's surname. I will renounce whatever is necessary if you consider me a threat to your throne. As a Martell, I have little claim to your throne, and that will be enough to calm those who enjoy talking too much.

I won't deny that initially, I aspired to the throne, but that was before I realized I was not alone in this world and that good people appeared along my way. Being king and avenging my mother and sister's deaths were the only things left for me after exile and spending a life hiding from everything and everyone to avoid death.

Today, I aspire to a life at court, but far from the throne that perished with my grandfather. I will be a prince but no longer seek to be a king. Your fiancée has taught me many things during our time together; she can be annoying at times, but I admire her strength. Undoubtedly, Athena is the ideal woman for you; she is the balance you need.

Athena slapped my face when I said I was alone in this world; she called me dramatic and said I was not alone, as there was still an aunt, a brother, and a cousin alive, while many had no friends at all. I swear, she has a heavy hand and a dirty mouth when she is angry.

I think in a future argument between you two, your dragons will instill little fear, as she is more fearsome, aunt.

We are trying to move quickly; communication may become a bit difficult in the coming days.

Aunt, I have one last request:

I know you are angry with her, but please... respond to the letters. She is bitter for not having received any response from you.

Aegon Martell
