No matter how much suffering you went through, you never want to let go of those memories. For those memories, makes you, you.
"Alright, we'll run some tests to make sure it's nothing serious. You're in good hands here." Becky finished the exam on a young woman, offering her a friendly smile.
"Thanks, but when can I get out of here? I need to get back to work!", she said, visibly troubled at the thought to spend the next hours in an ER.
"I assume the stress of overworking is what caused the symptoms in the first place. So I reckon you should take a few days off to destress."
Becky saw the woman's face fall, but she seemed to know Becky was right. "If that's what my doctor says, I guess I should listen", she sighed, and Becky offered her an encouraging smile.
"Trust me, I know how easy it can be to get caught up in work, completely forgetting about your own wellbeing in the process. But it's essential for your body and your mind to get breaks too."
"Okay, okay. I will take a few days off", she gave in, and Becky sends her a satisfied smile.
When the woman pulled out her phone to call her boss, Becky quickly excited the room. She handed Aster the patient's record and told her to order the blood work and labs as she passed her another iPad and Becky hurried to her next patient.
The ER was quite full today and it only seemed to get worse as her shift went on.
"Hey", Freen called out, before Becky could round the corner. "What time will you be off today?"
"Are you still not feeling well?" Becky asks bringing her hands to Freen's forehead to check her temperature.
"I'm just tired. I think I'll go home and get some rest. I still feel a bit tired from last night's long drive," Freen says back.
"Mhmm, you did kind of went overdrive last night," Becky chuckles and bites her lower lip as she glances at Freen from the corner of her eyes.
Freen looks at Becky with wide amused eyes and laughs softly in her throat. "You didn't like it, Dr. Armstrong?" she asks.
"Ohh..I liked it, I liked it very much, Dr. Chankimha." Becky chuckles louder which makes Freen laugh together.
"I'll be home by 5. Will that be good?" Becky asks.
"Yeah, I'll see you at home. Don't overdo it." Freen warns as she places a soft kiss on Becky's lips. "I won't." Becky smiles through the kiss.
*************************
Becky sighed as she got out of her car and headed to the front door. She was thoroughly exhausted to the point which all she wanted was to fall into her bed. She shut her eyes tiredly once she entered and headed to the living room. She expected Freen to be there, but she wasn't, infact the entire place was almost dark.
"Freen?" She called out to which she received no response.
Becky checked the kitchen, the study and finally headed to their bedroom. She was welcomed by an unexpected sight that made her bag drop to the carpeted floor from her hand along with her jaw hanged open. The room was decorated in white tulips and red roses, with twinkle lights - a lovely recreation of their wedding day. The lights are low. Freen is standing in the center, her smile is small but infinitely affectionate. "Happy Anniversary Love!!"
Becky crosses the room and allows herself to be enfolded in her wife's arms. This is home.
"So you pretended to be sick to do all this?" Becky asks, unable to keep from teasing.
Freen shrugs, "Maybe."
"I thought you forgot." Becky says burying her face in Freen's neck.
"How could I ever forget the day you became mine?" Freen places a tender kiss to becky's temple.
"Where are the girls?"
"Your parents offered to take them for the night." Freen answered running her hands through Becky's hair, Becky sighs contentdly.
Becky pulled back to look at Freen's eyes, "Happy Anniversary, Darling." She said leaning in to kiss her. Their lips touched for a deep kiss. Freen closed her eyes and parted her lips as invitation for Becky to skillfully slip her tongue in. Both moaned desperately into their kiss.
They pulled apart, catching their breath and looking into each other's eyes.
Freen slides out of Becky's arms, moving to carefully popping off the top of the champagne. She pours them each a glass.
"Happy Anniversary."
They say quick cheers, as they clink their glasses together.
Freen put the glasses down, an arm wrapping around Becky's waist between the couch and her, and they look at each other, "Love is not about how many days, months, or years we have been together. Love is about how much we love each other every single day. I still love you the same, maybe a little more every day. I know we have been through so much and I know we are stronger because of it. I won't wish it any different. I love you, Becky." Freen smiles though tears.
Becky wraps a hand around the back of Freen's neck and presses a kiss to her forehead. "I love you too, Freen."
They stay tangled in each other for a moment, Freen's head resting on becky's shoulder, "There is something I wanted to talk to you about."
Becky turns at that, her hand still gently running through Freen's hair, "What is it?"
Freen pulls away sighing, she releases a deep breath before talking, "I know this place is special for us, if I didn't move here on that fateful night I wouldn't have met the love of my life in that bar," Freen chuckles playfully, "or have any of these people who I call my friends and family now. I know how our hospital had become a home away from home for us. And I know we have promised a forever together in this house. But I genuinely feel like it's time for a change. Sometimes a change is just what we need. I know it's scary but for us to move on, we need to take a step forward, we can't keep going back in circles like we are doing now."
Freen pauses for a moment, "I can still see your hands trembling whenever you are in the ER, it happens to me too whenever I'm in the OR, to imagine that my heart almost stopped in that table when I was shot. We tried to hold on, but sometimes letting go is the best option."
Becky's eyes lock on hers as she moves closer to the woman. "You want us to move?" Becky asks hesistantly.
"I do." Freen says softly.
"Only if you want to Becky, I know it won't be easy to leave everything behind."
Becky nodded smiling.
"Are you sure?" Freen asks needing to be sure.
Becky takes freen's hands into her's, "Freen it doesn't matter where I'm as long as I'm with you. I look at you and see the rest of my life in front of my eyes. With you I feel already home. You and our kids, that is all I need."
Freen smiles and squeezes her hands. She pulls Freen back into her arms, feeling as Freen's tears fall onto her neck.
"Do you have a place in mind?" Becky asks.
Freen takes a sharp inhale as she pulls back, "I was thinking about my home town. My position is still open at the hospital and I might have recently heard about a resident position opening up which I suppose you could take. I know it's no Bangkok, but still we could do what we love which is being a doctor and at the same time put everything behind us once and for all. Just us and the girls. Our big small family."
A tear glistens in the corner of Becky's eye, "Surat Thani it is then." Becky said raising her glasses.
"To new beginnings." Freen clinks their glasses together.
"To new beginnings."
Freen leans in towards her so that their lips can finally meet. Becky's hand makes its way to the back of Freen's head, fingers gently tangling in her hair, and Freen puts a soft hand on Becky's cheek. When they pull apart, Becky sees her own smile reflected in Freen's beautiful face and they gaze at each other for what seems like a long time.
And Becky feels, even more than before, that she's finally home.
A/N: I'm ending the story here. I have thought about how to continue this story and I guess I have run out of plots. Maybe I will continue this book in the future. But for now it's the end. Thank you for all the support. Keep reading my stories.
