"It's not your dad," Genevieve mumbled before turning from Ray. She had to send the resignation email and get out of here fast.
And was it silly that she felt worse because Ray was seeing her like this? All weepy with ruined makeup and in the middle of a breakdown.
"Hey." Ray's voice softened. "Tell me what happened."
Genevieve's heart squeezed a little at the look of helpless panic on his face. "I have to resign."
"Why?" Ray scowled and straightened. "He has no right to—"
Focusing on her screen once more, Genevieve shook her head. "He has every right, Ray."
"Don't send that." He took her hand from the mouse. "Look at me."
"I look hideous." She had this nasty habit of rubbing her eyes whenever she cried. Racoon eyes must have set in.
"You don't look hideous." Ray placed Genevieve's palm over his cheek. "Come on. Look at me"
Sighing, Genevieve did as he asked. How did he manage to look so good even with that worried frown and light stubble across his jaw? Wait, why did he look so tired on a Monday morning?
"What's up with you?" She cradled his face for real now, turning it this way and that. "You look kinda exhausted. Were you up all night?"
"Answer my question first," Ray said in a firm voice. "Did my dad say something to you? Did he force you to resign?"
Genevieve scoffed and began adjusting Ray's tie. Not that it needed adjusting; she just needed an excuse to touch him. "As if. I know your dad seems like a big bad wolf, but I think my mum is tougher to deal with."
The woman didn't know when to quit. Anger rose again but Genevieve beat it down; now wasn't the time.
"Then what happened? I saw my dad on my way here. He had this smirk on his face, and my secretary said he had a brief meeting with you."
Genevieve turned back to her PC and hit send. There. Done. Finito. "My mum bought shares in a rival company and generously transferred ownership to me. We have a competitor clause, remember?"
"Your mother did that?"
Genevieve chuckled at the look of genuine shock on his face, "Crazy huh? Welcome to my world."
"But—"
"Let's talk about something else." Genevieve grabbed the gift bag. "Guess what I got you."
Instead of answering, Ray took her hand and led her to the sitting area. It was tiny compared to what other department heads had in their office, but she loved its cosy feel. Sad that she'd be leaving.
Give her a thousand guesses and she wouldn't have guessed how things turned out with Dominic and Dimes. Maybe leaving was a sign for her to face her passion. Since the trips, she had been slacking on her side projects.
Ray settled next to her, a whiff of his cologne tickling her nose as he faced her fully. "Don't avoid the question."
"Talking about my mum right now would make me shed useless tears, Ray." Genevieve nodded at the gift bag. "Go on. Open the gift already."
"Fine." Ray did as she asked. It was a regular white mug, but she had written 'best boss ever' across it with a purple sharpie. If he turns it at a certain angle, another writing would appear.
Ada had insisted Genevieve write the corny line with the promise that she would do a little cupid magic on the mug. Genevieve had been too curious to resist.
