The late afternoon sun shines the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters in a warm, golden light as Mitsuri Kanroji made her way through the compound. She had just returned from a minor mission, having spent most of the day patrolling a nearby village for any signs of demon activity. It had been a relatively uneventful day, which was a relief after hearing about the intense battle that had taken place just hours before she’d returned.
Mitsuri had heard that Giyuu Tomioka, Obanai Iguro, and Sanemi Shinazugawa had encountered a pair of Lower Moon demons and managed to defeat them without suffering any major injuries. Though the others were vague about the details.
After receiving brief news of their victory from a passing Kakushi, Mitsuri’s first instinct was to find her friends and check on them. She knew how taxing even a successful mission could be, especially against demons of the Lower Moon rank. And while everyone seemed physically unharmed, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, especially with Giyuu,i mean he always been like this but there probably something behind, right?
She had noticed him earlier, standing alone near the entrance to the headquarters, his expression more withdrawn than usual. Giyuu was always quiet, often lost in his own thoughts, but today, there was a heaviness in his eyes that made her worry. Mitsuri considered approaching him then, but he had disappeared before she could call out to him.
As she walked through the compound now, her mind kept drifting back to Tomioka. She hadn’t been on the mission with him, Obanai, and Shinazugawa, so she had no idea what could have happened to make him look so troubled.
Deciding she couldn’t leave things as they were, Mitsuri made her way toward the infirmary, hoping to find Kocho Shinobu. Perhaps Shinobu, with her keen insight and calming presence, could shed some light on what might be bothering Giyuu—or at the very least, help Mitsuri figure out how best to approach him.
As she entered the infirmary, she found Shinobu seated at a small table, carefully grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle. Despite the day’s demands, Shinobu’s smile was as serene as ever when she looked up and saw Mitsuri.
“Mitsuri,” Shinobu greeted her warmly. “It’s good to see you. How was your mission?”
Mitsuri returned the smile, though there was a hint of worry in her eyes. “It was fine, just a routine patrol. But I heard about the battle with the Lower Moons... Is everyone really okay?”
Shinobu paused for a moment, her hands stilling as she studied Mitsuri’s face. “Physically, yes. They all returned without any serious injuries."
Mitsuri bit her lip, trying to find the right words. “It’s Tomioka-san. He seemed... different when I saw him earlier. I mean, he’s always quiet, but this was... I don’t know, like something was really bothering him.”
Shinobu’s expression softened with understanding as she resumed her work. “Tomioka,he ’s always been a bit of a lone wolf, preferring to keep his thoughts and feelings to himself. But you’re right—something about this mission seems to have weighed heavily on him.”
Mitsuri frowned, her concern deepening. “I wish he’d let us in, let us help him somehow. I hate seeing him like this, so distant.”
Shinobu nodded
Mitsuri sighed, feeling a little better but still unsure of how to approach Giyuu. “I just don’t want to push him away by trying to help."
“You’re right,” Shinobu agreed, her smile reassuring. “But you have a kind heart, Mitsuri. I’m sure you’ll find a way to reach out to him without making him feel pressured.”
They spent a little more time talking, discussing their respective missions and sharing light-hearted stories to lift the mood. Shinobu’s calm presence always had a way of soothing Mitsuri’s worries, and by the time they finished, Mitsuri felt more determined to be there for Giyuu in whatever way she could.
As evening began to fall, the sky painted in shades of orange and pink, Mitsuri decided to take a walk around the compound to clear her head. She wandered aimlessly for a while, letting her thoughts drift, until she found herself near the training grounds where she spotted Iguro.
Obanai was practicing alone, his movements precise and focused as he struck a training dummy with his blade. Mitsuri watched him for a moment, admiring the fluidity of his techniques. Even after a long day, he was still pushing himself, honing his skills with unwavering dedication.
“Obanai!” Mitsuri called out, her voice cheerful as she approached.
Obanai stopped mid-strike, turning to face her. His expression softened slightly when he saw her, blushing. “Kanroji. What brings you here?”
Mitsuri smiled, walking up to him. “Just taking a walk to clear my head. I saw you training and thought I’d say hello.”
Obanai wiped the sweat from his brow, his eyes briefly flickering with something unreadable before he nodded. “It’s good to stay sharp, even after a day like this.”
Mitsuri nodded in agreement, though her mind was still partially occupied with thoughts of Giyuu. “You’re right. We never know when the next battle will come.”
There was a moment of silence as they stood together, the sound of the evening breeze rustling through the leaves around them. Mitsuri hesitated before speaking again, her tone more subdued.
“Obanai... did something happen on the mission today? With Giyuu, I mean. He seemed really troubled when I saw him earlier.”
Obanai’s gaze hardened slightly, though not directed at Mitsuri. It was as if he was wrestling with something inside himself. “He was quiet the whole time.
Mitsuri frowned, feeling the weight of Obanai’s words. “Do you think he’ll be okay?”Obanai’s expression softened as he looked at her "i'm sure hes fine, its Tomioka hes always like that no need to be worrying."
---
They stood together for a while longer, the comfortable silence between them a testament to their growing bond. As the sky darkened and the stars began to twinkle above, Mitsuri felt a sense of peace settle over her. She knew that Obanai’s protectiveness came from a place of care, and she appreciated that about him.
When they finally parted ways for the night.
The day had been long and filled with challenges, but Mitsuri knew that the bonds she was nurturing with her fellow Hashira were worth every effort. And no matter what the future held, she was ready to face it with the strength of those bonds, knowing that she was never truly alone.-------
