Chapter 13: An enchanting melody

    Erik was happy that she was interested in his music. It made him feel so good. He dressed up in an elegant suit, washed his face, brushed his teeth and put on his mask. He used to look like a great musician . ,,What would you like to hear?" He asked. ,,You are a composer. So, something you composed yourself" Penelope said. She was actually excited to hear it. Christine described it as beautiful, mysterious and enchanting. So, she wanted to hear it herself. Erik sat at the piano and put his hands on the keys. He began to play. Penelope closed her eyes and just listened. It was really enchanting. Christine was right. Sweet yet chilling. He didn't even need any sheet papers. He had all in his memory.
  Arthur went to the police station to report his wife's disappearing. He blamed Dr Chagnys for it. They were the only people he knew that could hide her. So the gendrames called them to the police station. ,,I told her that I will hide her if she needs, that's true" Christine said. ,,Her husband is abusive" she said in front of Arthur. She wasn't afraid of him even though she was so brittle. Raoul took her hand gently. ,,That's true. He really is. And we promised Penelope to give her a haven in our house if she would decide to leave him and it wouldn't be such a shame for her. We would protect her as my wife already said. But she didn't come to us. We don't know anything about her disappearing" he explained. ,,Listen to me, count! Do you really believe that I am abusive?!" Arthur asked. It made him so angry. ,,I believe her. You even attacked us last night" Raoul said calmly. Christine smiled at him. They were married for two years and he matured so much. The naive boy he was when they got married grew up into a charming and stable man. Also Christine herself did. She was still brittle and tender but she's got more healthy self-confidence and courage. Arthur seemed so erratic next to them both. So, the gendrames concluded that Penelope probably ran away from him. ,,We can't do anything more for you" they told him. Arthur was so destroyed to hear that. ,,Damn it!" He swore when he left the police station.
    As the melody ended Erik gently closed the piano. Penelope clapped her hands. ,,Bravo!" She was smiling honestly. Now she saw even more in Erik than before and even felt bad for the fact she planned to use him to finish Arthur. ,,I am so glad you liked it" Erik bowed.  It made Penelope a bit disappointed. He was still so detached even though he was also very openhearted to her. She needed more so he would trust her completely. She felt bad for it but there was no other chance for her to get her freedom. Erik definitely had no experience with any romantic relationship, so it shouldn't be that hard. She decided to make the first step herself.
