ROCKY Horror was one of those kinds of musicals that everybody just brushes off or ignores when it's brought up. You only really know one or two songs from the soundtrack, but even then, you wouldn't get up and start belting the song like there's no tomorrow. At least, that's what I thought. Actually, I didn't put much thought into it until Mr. Shue decided it was a good idea to perform Rocky Horror as this years school musical.
"Great news, guys, I've had a little inspiration. This week's musical lesson isn't really a lesson. It's a musical."
My heart skipped a beat. I exchanged a quick glance with Kurt, and we both nearly fainted from excitement. I clasped his hand tightly. "Okay, I think West Side... or maybe Mamma Mia?"
"No, no. That's too safe. Newsies?" he suggested.
But then Mr. Shue threw a curveball. "Rocky Horror."
I felt my excitement drain away, replaced by a tinge of disappointment. "Rocky Horror? Seriously?"
Finn looked around, confused. "I've never seen it."
Rachel raised her hand and spoke up. "Mr. Shue?"
"Yeah?" he responded, still smiling.
Rachel continued, "While I admire your choice of the groundbreaking 70s musical, aren't you worried that the adult themes might be a point of controversy?"
Kurt nodded in agreement, adding, "Seriously. A school in Texas couldn't even do Rent. It caused an outrage and they had to cancel the show."
"Isn't that the point of the arts? Pushing boundaries, doing things people say you can't for the sake of self-expression? Look, I've got it all figured out. I've cut out some of the risqué sections and I'm sending home permission slips to all your parents to make sure they're okay with it. And we're going to charge admissions and use the proceeds to help pay for transportation to nationals in New York."
Mr. Shue continued, "Okay, let's talk about casting."
Rachel immediately jumped in. "Oh, Finn and I will play Brad and Janet."
I couldn't hide my frustration as I muttered under my breath, "Smelled that from a mile away, so I'll be Magenta."
Artie, raising his hand and asked, "And I'll be playing the guy in the wheelchair, right?"
Mr. Shue nodded. "That's what I was thinking. And I thought Kurt could play the role of Frank-N-Furter."
Kurt's face twisted in disbelief. "No. There's no way I'm playing a transvestite in high heels and fishnets, and wearing lipstick."
Santana teased, "Why? Because that look was last season?"
Mike, surprising everyone, stepped forward. "I'll do it."
