Dewey brought me back to the station to talk about what was going on. "They were found in a similar way to Casey Becker and Steve Orth," he explained about the two young girls who were murdered last night.
I ran my hand through my hair and shook my head. "This can't be happening again, Dew," I said.
He gave me a weak smile, "Let's just hope it's not."
I nodded, spinning my rings around on my finger. His gaze went to them and he tried to change the subject for the moment. "How's Mark? I heard about him catching that guy."
"He's good. They're having a big trial right now."
He nodded. "You gonna call him?"
I shook my head. "No, he can't leave anyway. I don't want him to worry."
"He will when he hears, you know?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I know. I'll take care of it." Dewey gave me a look and seemed to be holding something back. "What is it?"
"Don't get mad," he started and I furrowed my brows. "Have you heard from them?"
I frowned, knowing exactly who he's talking about. "No, I haven't. And before you ask, no I don't know where they are either. And neither does Mark."
He nodded. We heard a commotion and I saw Gale making her way towards us, Deputy Hick's stopping her. Dewey sighed, excusing himself as he walked out of the room.
I pulled out my cell phone, seeing a lot of emails and messages. I opened the one from my mom first.
Mom: I heard what happened at your signing. I'm so sorry I wasn't there. I'm trying to get off a little early. I'll see you at home, right?
Hazel: It's fine. Yes, I'll see you soon.
Then I opened one from Mark.
Mark: I told you I had a bad feeling about you going
Hazel: It was a freak thing. It's the fifteen-year anniversary, something was bound to happen. Everything will be fine and I'll be home in a few days.
Mark: I'm serious about having Wallace take over. With what happened to those girls, I'm sure Judge Dennis will understand.
Hazel: You can't leave, I promise everything is okay.
Dewey and Gale were right outside arguing for a moment before she stormed off. I was about to go make sure Dewey was okay when another officer got his attention. "Sherriff, a few teenagers are here. Two of them said they got threatening calls from the victims' phones this morning. Olivia Morris and Jill Roberts."
I followed the two over to a group of three teen girls sitting nervously. My eyes widened when I realized who one was. "Isn't that Sid's cousin?" I asked Dewey as we walked closer.
"Damn it," he cursed, giving me a nod. "Girls," he said once we stopped in front of them. "You two got phone calls?"
"Yeah, us two," one girl said, Olivia, I presume.
"What's your favorite scary movie?" Jill rolled her eyes.
The blonde then spoke up, "It was the killer's voice. From Stab. I mean from, you know, your life," she ended it awkwardly, cringing. She then looked at me, holding out her hand. "I'm Kirby, by the way. Their friend."
I took her hand in mine, "Hazel."
"It's an honor to meet you," she blurted and I smiled.
"And the killer didn't call you?" Dewey asked her.
"No. Is that a bad thing? Does that mean I'm not going to live as long as these two?"
Dewey sucked in a breath, "No... maybe?"
I rolled my eyes, elbowing him. "Of course not. Just be careful."
"Oh my God, did you hear that? I'm going to be next!" She looked at her friends ignoring what I told her.
I sighed, feeling a familiar pit in my stomach. If someone is calling these girls, and one has a connection to Sid, maybe it is starting again. "Dewey, maybe I should cut this trip short. I don't think it's a good idea for me to be here."
He sighed, "I'm afraid that's not really possible, Haze." My eyes widened and he set his hand on my shoulder. "Look, no one thinks you're involved, but everyone is a suspect. I'm sorry. Besides, there was evidence in your car, you're a material witness." I shook my head, crossing my arms over my chest. Maybe Mark was right. "You'll have protection from some of my best officers."
"That's comforting," I mumbled, thinking back to college.
