They dropped me off down the street from my house and I walked down the sidewalk, sending a wave to the two officers sitting in the police cruiser. I went inside the house, finding my mom and Mark sitting in the kitchen. "You're back," Mark smiled, standing up to greet me with a quick kiss.
"Yeah," I nodded, sitting down at the table beside my mom. She set her hand on my shoulder, giving me a reassuring smile.
"How was your walk?" she asked.
"It was good. I stopped for flowers to put at the graves."
"That's nice. Everything is being kept up nicely?"
"Yeah."Just then, the doorbell rang and my mom went to get it, coming back a minute later with Jill. I stood up, worry coursing through me. "Jill, is everything okay?"
She smiled, nodding. "Yeah, uh my mom was wondering if you'd like to have dinner with us tonight?"
"Oh, uhm, sure, I'd love to," I said, feeling my shoulders relax.
"Great, you guys are welcome to come as well," she said to Mark and my mom.
"I have to head into the hospital soon, but thank you," Mom said.
"I go where my wife goes," Mark chuckled and Jill nodded.
"Okay, Mom said it will be ready in about an hour."
"Sounds great. We will be right over," I told her. She left and mom said goodbye before I went upstairs to the guest room, deciding to change into something that looked a little nicer for the dinner, but I can still run and fight in, for tonight.
I came back down stairs, Mark meeting me at the bottom. "You look beautiful," he said, causing me to blush a little. Even after being together for so long, his words still affect me like they did when we were just flirting with each other.
"You don't look too bad yourself, detective," I grinned, pecking his lips as I grabbed my phone and keys. I locked the door behind us and we made our way across the street. "I'm glad Jill is here tonight, and not at that party."
"Yeah, but don't worry. Dewey has officers watching the place."
We knocked on the front door, and Jill let us inside. "I'm so glad you guys could join us," Kate said, as we went into the kitchen.
"Thank you for inviting us," Mark said, shaking her hand.
"You have such a lovely home," I said, going towards a photo hung on the wall in the hall outside the kitchen. It was of Kate and her sister, Maureen. Along with Sydney and a baby Jill. I smiled a little, feeling my heart hurt, seeing Sidney's big smile.
"That was taken only a few weeks before..." Kate sighed. "Hard to believe how long it's been."
"Yeah, feels like only yesterday, to be honest," I said, turning towards her.
"I know you didn't know my sister long after you moved here, but she really was a great woman. She just made some questionable choices." Kate looked at the photo sadly.
"I know," I told her, setting my hand on her shoulder. "I'm truly sorry about everyone you lost."
"Thank you," she said, wiping a stray tear away. "I'm sorry too. You were so young when this all happened."
I looked back, seeing Sidney staring back at me. "We all were."

Mark and I started helping Kate with the food while Jill went up to her room, or her cell, as she called it. "Oh shoot, I forgot to get the wine for the sauce!" Kate exclaimed. "I'll have to run to the store. I could have sworn I had a bottle here. Can you keep this warm for me?"
"Oh, I can run to the store for you," Mark said.
"Really?" she asked, looking at him gratefully. "That would be so lovely, thank you."
"It's no problem, really," he said. She wrote down what kind of wine was needed and he headed out, kissing me goodbye on the way.
"He's such a great man," Kate said, glancing at me as she stirred the pot.
"He really is," I said with a smile.
"Handsome too," she giggled.
"That he is," I laughed.
The landline started to ring, Kate glanced over to me. "Could you get that?"
I nodded, going into the living room and picking up the phone. "Roberts residence," I said.
"You're a survivor, aren't you, Hazel? Your one and only skill: You survive. Well, I have one question for you. What good is it to be a survivor in this little drama if everyone close to you is dead?"
I gasped, hearing the deep voice through the phone. "Who are you?" I asked.
"Turn on the TV to channel 6," he said.
"Who the fuck are you?" I exclaimed, gaining Kate's attention. She came around the corner, looking at me in confusion.
"Turn it on, watch the teaser." I grabbed the remote, turning the television on and to the right channel.
"... But it nearly turned deadly tonight, with the latest victim of this attack being the wife of the Woodsboro Sheriff, Gale Riley, AKA Gale Weathers, who's in serious condition tonight after being stabbed. Her assailant then disappeared—"
Kate gasped, her hand going over her mouth and all I could think about was the boys being there tonight. It can't be them, right? No, they were with me when Olivia was attacked. Unless they're working with someone...
"Glad you came home, Hazel? Has it been worth it yet?"
"Why are you doing this?" I asked.
"Maybe little Sidney will be next? Or one of her friends? You can't save them. You can only watch." The line went dead and my eyes widened.
"Jill!" I exclaimed, rushing up the stairs with Kate hot on my heels. We opened her door to see the room empty, her window open, the curtains blowing in the breeze. "Shit." I saw her laptop open, her messages with Kirby on the screen. "She's gone to Kirby's! Call her. You need to get her back here!" I said frantically to Kate.
"Okay," Kate said, pulling out her cell phone. "She's not answering."
We rushed down the stairs. "Let's go tell the cops," she said and we went to the door, opening it to see no one in the cop car. Just then, the killer popped up, rushing onto the porch. We screamed, running inside and trying to close the door, but the killer was putting all of their strength into trying to open it.
"Press up on the bottom," I said as I pushed from the top. Kate slid down the door, pushing her body against the bottom. We finally got the door shut and locked. "Come on Kate, we've got to go," I said, turning to head to the back door.
A pained groan left her lips, causing me to turn back to her, shocked to see a knife coming through her throat. "Tell Jill I'm so sorry," she croaked, her body going limp.
"No!" I cried, kneeling and pulling her away from the door, laying her down. I felt for a pulse, not feeling anything. I shook my head, getting up and heading towards the back door. I paused, seeing Judy standing in the doorway. "Hicks. What are you doing?"
She eyed me, holding onto her gun. It made me think of mine sitting in my purse back at the house. Why didn't I bring it with me? "I just saw somebody coming around the side of the house. Where are Hoss and Perkins? I couldn't get 'em on the radio... Whose blood is that?"
"It-it's Kate's. We were just attacked. She's dead."
"Where is she?"
"Front door," I pointed behind me.
She held out her hand. "Stay here," she said. I nodded, watching as she left the room, and then rushed out the back door, grabbing Kate's car keys on the way out.
I jumped into her car, pulling out of the driveway just as Hicks came running around the house.
