This came about through a combination of watching The Five Doctors around four times in a row, and then visiting Cambridge. I hope you enjoy : )
This features very mild spoilers for Aliens of London/World War Three.
Yaz trailed her hands through the cool water, her fingers dancing in the blue-green ripples.
"Have you done this before?" She asked, watching as the Doctor expertly navigated them through a section of thick greenish-brown water reeds.
"A long time ago." The Doctor answered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she adjusted her stance and used the heavy pole to propel them along the river.
Realising the Doctor wasn't going to elaborate, Yaz turned back to the river, watching trees, plants and buildings peacefully floating past them.
"You know," she said after a few minutes, taking a careful sip of orange juice, "I've never been to Cambridge before."
"Oh?""The furthest south we ever got was London."
"A good place to get to." The Doctor reasoned. "Did you know, London has the highest alien population density of any city in Europe? Globally second only to New York, of course. Wonderful city, I must take you at some point. There's this incredible zero gravity bar there, in the 2300's. Best guango juice this side of the galaxy, and a fascinating bartender called Alonso. They even have comedy nights, it's great! But anyway, back to London and it's alien population.....you know, the things you lot are oblivious to will never fail to surprise me." She said all this in her usual style - extremely quickly while simultaneously making something rather difficult look very easy.
Yaz mentally accepted the concept of a zero gravity bar, bartender called Alonso, and guango juice, and rolled her eyes in mock-offence at the last comment. "Thanks. Anyway...it was pretty weird actually, on our last day in London - this was quite a while ago, by the way - there was that explosion at Downing Street? We were all fine, of course, but it was all over the news. Mum was convinced it was terrorists, and Dad swore it was aliens. The official version was a gas explosion, I think."
The Doctor stared down at her boots, realising immediately the incident that Yaz was referring to.
"Well," she began, "your Dad wasn't entirely wrong."
"What?" Yaz spun around to stare at her, rocking the boat violently and almost tipping them both into the water in the process. "Really?"
"Yep." The Doctor looked up, punting them forwards again as she considered her explanation. "It was a family called the Slitheen, from Raxacoricofallapatorius."
"Raxacoricofallapatorius?"
The Doctor grinned. "Exactly! The twin planet of Clom."
"Clom? Bit of an odd couple."
"They like a joke, the raxacoricofallapatorians. But anyway, me, my.....Rose, Mickey, and Harriet Jones worked it out. Sort of. Eventually. Somehow."
"Hang on....Harriet Jones, the Prime Minister?"
"The very same. Though she was only MP for Flydale North back then, of course."
"Wow. Well. That's cool"
"It was warm, rather than cool. That metal box did save us, but it was roasting. We almost boiled. You can tell your Dad he was right all along, though. It was aliens."
"No chance. I'm not giving him the satisfaction." Yaz grinned.
The wind blew gently past, and all was calm on the River Cam for another minute or two. They watched the golden lights in the trees float by, and the flower petals strewn across the path, presumably left over from the week's celebrations.
"I do love May week..." Said the Doctor, almost wistfully.
"I thought it was June?" Said Yaz.
"Yep."
"Bit confusing, isn't it?"
"Definitely. It took the Tardis a few hundred years to get her head around."
