CHAPTER TEN
So school sucks. At least second period did. I had to stand and talk to the class and argue with the teacher who was yelling at Cody for being late. My nerves were already frayed as it was and I really didn't feel like getting any crap from anyone. The other classes came and went and I realized that Cody seemed to be in all of my morning classes. That was the one upside to the day so far.
I ran into Sapphire on the way to lunch. She squealed and pulled me into a hug.
"Oh em Geeeee!" she squeaked. "You're here! Skye said you were coming, but I dind't believe her! But here you are!"
"Yep, here I am," I said dryly. I wasn't in the best of moods after running into Quinn.
"What's wrong?" she asked quizzically.
"Just . . . It's not my day today. I was late to school because of traffic and coming to school in the middle of the year sucks. So much work to catch up on," I answered, feeling bad for lying. Sapphire had no clue why Quinn and I hated each other.
"Oh! You poor thing! I could get you help with your homework if you'd like! I know a couple of people that could tell you about the traffic everyday, too," she rambled on about the things she could help me with and I smiled gently. This is why I like Sapphire so much.
"It's okay, I'll get used to it," I said softly, interrupting her babble.
She grinned. "Sorry. I got away with myself there. Oh! I didn't introduce you to my friends."
There were four girls standing behind her. The petty blonde with the light brown eyes was Ruby. She was usually wearing her ruby pendant around her neck and was about as tall as Sapphire. To Ruby's left was Amethyst. She had long brown hair and violet eyes. She was taller than everyone standing around her and wore barely any jewelery. Behind Amethyst was Diamond. She had black hair and grey eyes. She had in diamond studs and was shorter than everyone else, but she had an air of confidence that made you think twice about making fun of her for it. Then, there was the odd girl out. Her name was Rosie. She leaned quietly against the lockers, as if she was walking with them only because of one person. I guessed it would be Sapphire. She had red hair and piercing green-amber eyes. She watched me with a cool expression. She gave me a knowing smile and I knew right then that I was going to like her more than the others. Even Sapphire.
I decided to call them the Jewel Crew. I thought it fit.
"Who are you sitting by at lunch?" Sapphire asked.
I thought for a second. "I think I was going to sit by Cody?" I said, wondering if he asked me. I was out of it all day.
Sapphire gasped. "Cody Vance?"
I nodded. "I think so."
Rosie raised an eyebrow and the Gems started whispering to themselves. Sapphire's eyes hardened slightly and her smile didn't quite reach her eyes anymore. I resisted the urge to grimace and ask what was wrong, but the expression was gone before I could even open my mouth anyways. I raised an eyebrow at Rosie, since I thought she could give me an explanation. She shook her head slightly and her eyes told me to keep quiet about it for now. I bobbed my head slightly and she turned away, feigning uninterest.
"Why don't you sit with us, Lacey? Then you can sit with someone that you know better," Sapphire squealed.
"Uh, I'll have to tell Cody first," I stated, uncertain.
