"What noise?" one of the men responded dismissively. "It's probably just a mouse bumping into something."
"No, I remember that Lan Hui told us to lock up a little brat in this abandoned woodshed. Could it be..."
"You should see how badly he was injured when he was thrown in. He's probably dead by now. But we should deal with the body; we can't just leave it here to rot."
Hearing the conversation outside, Luo Liyan and Yuchi Che's hearts leaped into their throats.
Bending down, she wanted to hide behind the pile of straw, but the voices outside started up again.
"I noticed Lan Hui seems quite interested in that brat. If we handle it like this, she might still question us later. It's better if we act like we don't know his condition and ask Lan Hui how to handle it." The more cautious-sounding man suggested.
The other man strongly agreed.
Hearing their footsteps moving away, Luo Liyan let out a long sigh of relief, pulled the stopper from the wine flask, and handed it to Yuchi Che.
"Hurry up and drink this. We need to leave immediately!"
Yuchi Che obediently took a couple of swigs from the flask while Luo Liyan dressed him in new clothes and shoes, quickly stuffing their belongings into the pile of straw and hiding them. They both crouched low and slipped out of the woodshed.
Quickly making their way to a secluded courtyard, Luo Liyan crouched against the wall.
"Step on me to climb up. I'll catch you when you come down."
"I can do it myself." Yuchi Che frowned and stepped back a few paces.
He couldn't protect Sister, but he wasn't going to use her to escape.
Seeing his hesitation even in such a critical moment, Luo Liyan's expression darkened. She lowered her voice and scolded him, "To achieve great things, one must not be concerned with small details! If you delay here, we're increasing our risk."
Yuchi Che took a deep breath, mentally cursing his own foolishness.
He climbed up onto the wall, stepping on Luo Liyan's shoulders. Once he was steady, Luo Liyan took a few steps back, then surged forward to climb up the wall herself.
Seeing her adept wall-climbing skills, Yuchi Che's lips curved into a slight smile.
It seemed Sister was quite lively even in her private moments.
"Look over there!"
Suddenly, someone in the distance shouted. Luo Liyan turned around to see a few lantern bearers running toward them, and quickly adjusted her position to jump down.
Whether it was due to the tension or not, she felt a sharp pain in her foot as she landed.
Damn it!
Luo Liyan's heart tightened. She took a deep breath, trying to act as if nothing was wrong, and turned to Yuchi Che with outstretched arms.
"Close your eyes and jump down. Don't be afraid, I'll catch you."
"Okay." Yuchi Che nodded firmly, jumped into her arms without hesitation.
Hand in hand, they ran through the back alleys of the Lantern Street.
"Don't run! Damn it! When I catch you two, I'll break your legs!"
Behind them, a group of thugs with torches cursed and chased after them.
The pain in Luo Liyan's ankle grew more intense. She bit her lip tightly, glancing down at Yuchi Che, who was stumbling but making a valiant effort to keep up.
