Jiang Haochen's slender fingers lightly tapped on the edge of the bed, and the fog in his mind finally cleared.
Although he didn't know how Gu Mingxuan had made it from M country to here, the fact that he had lost his memory but could still spout such madness indicated that this global catastrophe likely had something to do with him. Even if he wasn't the mastermind, he was at least a high-level accomplice.
But...
Jiang Haochen's brows furrowed slightly, and his gaze at the small figure in his arms deepened, like the bottomless waters of a dark pond.
From the looks of it, she didn't seem to recognize this man named Gu. But why was she so certain that there was something off about him?
Could it be merely because they both retained some level of human consciousness?
Sensing the probing gaze from above her, Luo Liyan's body stiffened slightly, a wave of panic creeping in as if she might be exposed.
But then she reminded herself that she didn't need to "win over" Jiang Haochen in this world. No matter what he thought, she owed him no explanation.
Her heart calmed again.
"Mr. Gu? Gu?" Luo Liyan called out as she glanced at the name badge on Gu Mingxuan's chest.
This name sounded familiar to him, and some disjointed memories flashed through his mind. Before he could grasp them, her soft voice sounded again.
"Can you remember anything now?"
"Not really. When I opened my eyes, the world was already like this," Gu Mingxuan shook his head.
However, he wasn't telling the truth. In his memory, there were still images of a large group of people escorting him, being ambushed by zombies along the way. At the end of those memories, a man had pressed a dark, long tube against his forehead.
Instinctively, Gu Mingxuan raised his hand and touched his forehead, a deep loneliness gradually spreading across his face.
Seeing him like this, Luo Liyan felt her heart tighten.
In this apocalyptic world, having lost all memory and waking up to find himself a misfit, unable to communicate with his own kind, and those he could communicate with all wanted to kill him—how painful must that be?
He had finally met her, hopeful and joyful, only to end up wounded and battered.
Looking at the charred marks all over Gu Mingxuan's body, Luo Liyan's hands tightened on the blanket.
But suddenly, a large hand covered her eyes.
Jiang Haochen leaned in close to her ear, his voice a mix of exhaustion and pleading, "Be good, don't pity him. Think about it—if he played a part in all the disasters in this world, then he's only getting what he deserves."
Luo Liyan blinked, her long eyelashes brushing against Jiang Haochen's palm, stirring his already unsettled heart.
"Mr. Gu," Jiang Haochen's voice turned cold as he looked at Gu Mingxuan, his gaze like a knife piercing to the bone. "Don't try to play the victim here. You sought to force human evolution and caused the irreversible situation we're in now. It's no surprise that you've been abandoned by everyone."
"Hah, defective product," Gu Mingxuan sneered coldly, utterly indifferent to Jiang Haochen's attitude.
Luo Liyan quickly removed Jiang Haochen's hand from her eyes before his anger boiled over. She shot an exasperated glare at Gu Mingxuan.
He sure had a knack for seeking death. Even though he wasn't a match for Jiang Haochen, he loved provoking him.
Gu Mingxuan awkwardly rubbed his nose and got up from the floor.
