By 8 o'clock, we finish up, secure the bakery, and begin our walk to the bus stop. The feeling of being followed creeps up on me, but a swift glance around confirms I'm alone. I should really give up those stalker novels; they're starting to affect me. Humming my favorite tune, "Hey you, why don't you come over here?" I continue walking.

Abruptly, someone dashes towards me, prompting me to run as quickly as possible. Startled by a car horn, I freeze like a specter of the night. Unsure of what to do next, I see a large shadow loom over me.

"Please, I have no money."

"Elara, are you alright? What happened?"

"I'm not sure, Blake; it was all so sudden."

"Did they hurt you when they chased you?"

"No, I'm just frightened, Blake."

"Come, sit in the car. Let me make a quick call first."

He is not answering the phone; let me leave him a message. "Hey Elexander, I was driving to your house and on the way, I saw that girl from the diner looking upset, so I stopped. It seems some men ran after her, and when they saw the car, they ran in the opposite direction. I will be a little late for the meeting; I'll take her home to ensure she's safe; she's quite distressed. I'll catch up with you soon."

"Apologies for the inconvenience, but my bus arrives in 25 minutes."

"You're not troubling me at all. Could you give me your address? It's on my way home."

My phone keeps ringing. "Hello boss, she's alright, not injured, just a bit upset. Rest assured; everything is under control. I'll see you shortly."

Stopping in front of my house, I feel safe and relieved to be home.

"Thank you, Blake. I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't shown up. Would you like to come in for some coffee?"

"No thanks, I have to go; we have an important meeting tonight."

I rise on my tiptoes and plant a kiss on his cheek. "Goodnight, Blake."

"Goodnight, beautiful."

After locking my door, I make my way to the kitchen to whip up some soup for dinner. As I sit alone in the kitchen savoring my soup, all I crave is a hot bath, a good book, and some rest. With an evening shift ahead, I can afford to sleep in.
