𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐘𝐁𝐎𝐘'𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐕Sodapop and Y/N were the kind of couple that made you believe in forever. They were inseparable, always talking about the future like it was a guarantee. Soda would go on and on about marrying her, starting a family, building a life together. I'd hear him talk about it late at night when he thought no one else was listening, and it was clear he meant every word. He was in love with her in a way that was rare, the kind of love that makes everything else seem small in comparison.
But then, everything changed when Soda got drafted to Vietnam. I'll never forget the day he left. Y/N was heartbroken, holding onto him like if she just hugged him tight enough, he wouldn't have to go. She cried into his shoulder, and I could see the pain in his eyes, too, even though he tried to stay strong for her. Before he left, he gave her a promise ring—a small silver band that meant the world to her. He promised her he'd come back, promised us all that he'd come back.
But things didn't go as planned.
We should've been throwing him a welcome home party, celebrating his return. But instead, we were planning his funeral. I still remember the day we got the news—how everything just stopped. Y/N... she was shattered. It was like all the light had gone out of her eyes.
It's been a few years since Soda passed, but Y/N still hangs around the house. She's still close with us, but she's different now. There's a quietness to her that wasn't there before, like she's carrying a weight that none of us can help her with. She doesn't date, doesn't even think about seeing other guys. Sodapop was her person, and he always will be. She still wears that promise ring he gave her, the one he promised he'd come back for.
Sometimes, when I see her looking at it, I can't help but feel this ache in my chest. They were supposed to have a lifetime together, and instead, all she has left are memories and a ring.
It's not fair—none of it is.
But despite everything, she keeps going. And maybe that's the most heartbreaking part of all.
