CHAPTER EIGHTEEN:
IT ALL STARTED WITH GWEN▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN GWEN'S MISSING?"
"I dunno," Peter replied nervously, running a hand through his hair, the screen shaking as he fought the oncoming panic attack. "Ketti, I can't lose — I can't — I can't lose Gwen. It's Gwen. It's—it's Gwen."
"I know, it's okay," Ketti sat up in Logan's bed, his hand tracing circles over her back. Wade slowly woke on her other side (we didn't fuck, it was cuddles and mild touches until Ketti fell asleep, hold your horses, the stable boy hasn't left the station) and Ketti tried to focus on Peter.
"Ketti, I'm really scared," Peter let out a soft noise. "I can't — I've lost everyone. May, Ben, MJ, I can't — I can't lose Gwen."
"You won't," Ketti replied firmly. "We'll get her back. Whatever's happening, we'll figure it out. Me, you, Wade, Logan. Johnny. We can call Frank if we need to. He'll help."
"I — I can do it on my own."
(Because that always works out.)
"No chance," Wade spoke up, sitting next to her and leaning his head on her shoulder. "Where's the last place you saw her?"
—
The problem with being a superhero was that Peter Parker had morals.
Morals that all of Ketti's other friends did not have.
And in leaving Ketti alone with Loki (because who's gonna protect her better than a literal god?) the rest of them went on the hunt for whoever took Gwen.
"Will you stop pacing, you're giving me a migraine," Loki rolled his eyes, flipping the page in his book. "They will be fine."
"And if they're not?" Ketti asked worriedly. "What if something happens to Gwen?"
"Better her than you or I," Loki shrugged unbothered. "Ketti, they're both immortal."
"Gwen isn't."
Loki hummed, looking over his book.
"What're you reading?" Ketti asked, sitting on the sofa next to him.
"High-level Asgardian magic, you wouldn't begin to comprehend in your small little human mind."
Ketti humphed, leaning into the seat. "Why're you here, Loki?"
"I've told you," Loki replied with a sigh, closing the book upon realizing he wouldn't get any reading done. "For fun. I enjoy you."
"Yeah, but why stay?" Ketti asked in confusion. "Why don't you just...go?"
"Would you like me to?" Loki raised his eyebrows, looking at Ketti in mild amusement.
"Well, no, but—"
"—Then, stop with the silly questions," Loki rolled his eyes.
Ketti pouted to herself a bit, watching Loki as he reopened his book. They were quiet for a long time, Ketti lost in thoughts of her friends, and Loki in his book of magic.
"I'm sorry," Loki broke the silence softly, glancing up at her. "For what's to come. I wish I could stop it."
(What the fuck does that mean? Ha, I know what it means.)
Ketti's blood went cold. "What?"
"I didn't think I'd like you," Loki continued, gazing into Ketti's eyes. "And for that, I am truly sorry."
"Loki, what do you—"
But a second later, Loki was gone.
Ketti jumped up, looking around. She rushed through the house, trying to find any mention of her friend, but he was a really and truly gone.
As she sat back on the sofa, worry overcoming her and tears threatening her vision, she spotted a ring on the sofa where Loki had been sitting. He must have left it.
(That's awfully out of character for the god of mischief to leave a piece of jewelry behind unintentionally.)
Ketti took it between her fingers and gazed down at it, stroking the onyx metal. She slipped it over her right hand, where it tightened and fit her size.
Must have been some Asgardian magic.
And then Ketti burst into tears.
—
Ketti called Matt in hopes of his comfort. Even if he wasn't a superhero or a god like Loki, she didn't really want protection, she just wanted a friend.
But he didn't answer either.
Which terrified her.
No one was answering Ketti, Loki had left, and Gwen was still missing.
"Hey, Matty, it's Ketti," she left another voicemail. "Just...please call me back, I'm worried. Gwen's...missing and we don't know where she is and I was hoping maybe we could hang out and...just call me back. Love you."
After ending the voicemail, Ketti heard something crash in the kitchen. With a frown, and a hopeful lurch of her heart — because what if it was Loki playing a fucking prank and he was back? — she walked over, only to find her favorite mug in shambles on the ground.
"Oh," Ketti frowned, grabbing the broom to clean it. She knew now Loki had fixed it previously, but why break it again? "Bummer."
The front door creaked.
Ketti stood quickly, looking over the bar of her kitchen with wide eyes when she spotted someone standing there.
It wasn't the first time someone entered thinking she was the crack den, but she was already on edge from Gwen's kidnapping, and the dark look on the man's face sent her stomach somersaulting.
"I—I'm sorry, sir, I think you have the—"
The man said nothing, watching her a moment. Long hair to his shoulders, black mask covering his mouth and nose, eyes rimmed black with paint, a black vest and chest piece, and...a metal arm.
Ketti wasn't one to fucking judge but this was incredibly unusual and she was so fucking scared.
It happened in about thirty seconds. She placed the broom down, stepped out of the kitchen with her hands raised in caution, and then a fucking second later, everything was black.
"Target acquired."
