Happy Reading :)
"This burger is amazing," Marcus said, food spilling out of his mouth.
"Don't talk with your mouth full," Mama scolded.
"Sorry, Ma." He grinned, showing more disgusting food bits. We were sitting on two long tables combined, in our regular seating arrangement, except now Anthony sat between me and Joey.
"It's like no time has passed," I muttered to Anthony, who was looking on, amused.
"I bet," he laughed.
My cousins, aunt, and uncle had to get back home before Monday so they had left already. It was just my brothers and parents here today, sitting with Anthony and I. Not nerve-wracking at all.
"So what have you all been up to today?" Mama asked.
I choked on a fry.
"Sightseeing," Marcus snorted.
"Just being tourists," Melvin said, looking down at his plate.
"Did you do those tour buses?"
"No," Greg said.
"We saw the Statue of Liberty." Leo smiled.
I felt the anger flare up again, how could they be joking about this?
"Really?"
"Relax," Anthony murmured and grabbed my hand under the table. It was a gesture he'd done a million times, but now, around my chaotic family, it brought me peace.
"I wish we went, but Benny wanted to go to Central Park."
"I wanted to eat at every food truck, but your mother didn't allow me," Papa huffed.
"Yes, because you just had a heart attack, Pop," Leo scolded.
"I don't think you're in any position to tell Pop what not to do," I snapped.
"Watch it," Greg growled.
"Why?" Mama asked me.
I paled.
"N-nothing."
"Lydia," her voice became stern.
I straightened my spine, there was no way I was telling my mother her sons were found on the top of the Statue of Liberty in the middle of the night.
"Yes?"
"What did you boys do?" She narrowed her eyes at the boys.
"Why is it something we did?"
"It always is."
"Lydia, tell her, tell her it's nothing," Felix smiled at me.
"Yes, Lydia, tell me what they did."
My cheeks were heating up. I was sleep-deprived, I had a horrible start to my day, and then it got progressively worse by embarrassing myself in front of my ex-boyfriend. Not to mention whatever weirdness was happening with Anthony. And now my mom was grilling me for the first time in years! I forgot how hard it was to keep anything from her.
"Say something," Melvin whispered.
"Yeah, and give Dad another heart attack," Marcus muttered.
"What?"
"Oh my god, Marcus!"
"What did they do, Lydia?" Mom slammed her hand down on the table and I jumped.
"Melvin got a tattoo!" I blurted. I instinctively pulled down my cardigan to make sure my own tattoo was covered.
"Che cosa?"
"What?"
"Lydia!"
"You have a tattoo?"
"Marcus has one too!"
"You little snitch!"
"I'm sorry!"
"Marcus?"
"Greg made me do it!"
"You little shit!"
"Three of you have tattoos?"
"Yes!"
"Just the three of them!"
"We tried to stop them!"
"They wouldn't listen!"
"Oh hell no!"
"Leo and Felix were okay with it, Ma!"
"Leo found the tattoo shop!"
"You're a liar!"
"Felix picked the tattoo!"
"Dead, you're all dead is what you are."
"Well, you have our matching tattoo to remember us by!"
"Felix? Leo? You too?"
"Just a small one, Ma."
"What?"
"Not like Joseph's, his is huge."
"JOSEPH TONELLI!"
"I was intoxicated! I couldn't see the font!"
"Joseph Tonelli, you did not get a tattoo!"
"It was irresponsible tattooing on the artist's part."
"Joseph!"
"I'm going to leave him a strongly worded review."
"Shut up, Joey!"
