"I want one too."

We all looked around at each other and burst into laughter again. Papa came around the table and took a look at each of our tattoos. Mama in the meantime was fanning herself while Anthony was talking to her, trying to calm her down.

"It's okay, Mrs. Tonelli, they're young, they can wear long sleeves and it won't even show."

"They look like criminals. Lydia will never find a job."

"Nowadays, everyone has tattoos. And don't worry, if Lydia needs, she can be my employee forever." Anthony winked.

Mama cracked a smile and peered at Anthony sideways.

"Come on, Mrs. T." He gave her his most charming smile and she broke.

"Fine, but you can't fire her, she won't find work again!"

Anthony wrapped an arm around her affectionately and smiled, catching my eyes.

"I won't."

***

I won't.

I won't.

I won't.

Over and over those played in my head. He would never fire me. We would always just be friends.

I thought I blew it when I crawled on the floor like a drunken idiot, I thought he would be too embarrassed to be with me after that.

But no, he was never going to give me a chance in the first place. He had basically sister-zoned me when he told Mama he would never fire me. Never? What was he trying to do, be my best friend?

I didn't want it, I didn't want him to be my best friend. I didn't need him to be my best friend.

"Lyd, come on," Marcus snapped his fingers in front of my face. He was carrying his luggage from the hotel downstairs.

"Sorry." I stepped out of his way and followed him down to the van they had rented to take them to the airport. Anthony had hung back at the apartment and I had gone with them to pack their bags to leave.

"How are you getting back from the airport?" Felix asked.

"The train," I sighed.

"Alone?"

"Yes, I've done it alone before, and I'll do it now, and I'll probably do it tomorrow."

Melvin flicked my head.

"Don't be sassy, he's just asking a question."

"You're just asking? You're not going to insist I hire a bodyguard to take me home?"

"I don't know why Anthony can't come with us so you're not alone on the way home," Leo said, shaking his head.

"I don't need Anthony," I huffed. "I've lived here four years without him. Since when is everyone team Anthony?"

"I would be more comfortable letting you come with us to the airport, if I knew you would have a friend with you on the way home," Felix said carefully.

"Are you saying I can't come with you?"

Felix looked at me and I held his stare, amusement glittered in his eyes. If he let me come, he would be keeping his word to not treat me the way he used to. If he refused, the tattoo initiation was all a lie.

"What's it gonna be Felix?" I challenged.

"Fine," he sighed.

I almost cheered.
