jake sat at his desk, absentmindedly tapping his pencil against his notebook. mr. kim was going on about some complicated math problem, but jake’s mind was elsewhere. he kept replaying yesterday in his head—how heeseung had sat with him on the bench, the way he’d offered to listen, how easy it was to talk to him.
“jake? sim jake!” mr. kim’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts. “are you paying attention?”
“uh, yeah, sorry,” jake mumbled, feeling his cheeks heat up as a few students turned to look at him.
jungwon nudged him from the side, whispering, “you okay? you’ve been spacing out.”
jake nodded quickly, trying to focus on the board, but his mind kept drifting back to heeseung. he wasn’t sure why he kept thinking about him so much.
sure, heeseung was nice, and they’d been getting closer, but there was something else. something that made jake’s heart beat a little faster whenever heeseung was around.
...
as the class ended and they packed up their things, jungwon kept talking about plans for the weekend. “maybe we can all go to the arcade or something,” he suggested, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “what do you think, jake?”
“hm? oh, yeah, sounds good,” jake replied, though his thoughts were still elsewhere.
jungwon raised an eyebrow. “you sure you’re okay? you’ve been really distracted lately.”
jake hesitated, not sure how to put it into words. “just... stuff.”
jungwon didn’t push, but he gave jake a knowing look. “well, yknow the drill, if you ever want to talk, i’m here.”
jake nodded, grateful for jungwon’s understanding. they walked out of the classroom together, heading to their next class.
...
as they passed by the gym, jake’s eyes caught sight of heeseung shooting hoops with a few other guys. he couldn’t help but stop and watch for a moment, admiring how effortlessly heeseung moved on the court.
“heeseung hyung’s really good at basketball, huh?” jungwon commented, noticing jake staring.
“yeah, he is,” jake replied, his heart doing that weird fluttery thing again.
jungwon smirked. “you’ve been spending a lot of time with him lately.”
jake shrugged, trying to play it cool. “he’s just... easy to talk to.”
“uh-huh,” jungwon said, but there was a teasing tone in his voice. “well, let’s get going before we’re late.”
as they continued walking, jake couldn’t shake the feeling that something was changing inside him. every time he thought about heeseung, there was this warmth in his chest, a feeling he hadn’t experienced before. it was confusing and a little scary, but at the same time, it felt... nice.
...
during lunch, jake found himself sitting next to heeseung again. they talked about random things—classes, music, weekend plans. jake found himself laughing more, feeling more at ease with heeseung than he had with anyone in a long time.
“you’ve got a nice laugh,” heeseung said suddenly, catching jake off guard.
“oh, uh, thanks,” jake replied, feeling a blush creep up his neck.
“i mean it,” heeseung continued, his voice soft. “it’s good to see you smile.”
jake looked down at his food, not sure how to respond. his heart was pounding in his chest, and he could feel that warmth spreading again. heeseung’s words meant more to him than he could explain.
after school, they walked to the dorms together, the conversation easy and light. jake couldn’t help but steal glances at heeseung, noticing little things he hadn’t before—the way heeseung’s hair fell into his eyes, the way he laughed, the way he always seemed to know when jake was feeling off.
as they reached the dorms, heeseung turned to jake. “so, tomorrow? another basketball game?”
jake smiled. “sure, i’m in.”
heeseung grinned back. “great. see you then, jake.”
as jake watched heeseung walk away, he felt something click inside him. it wasn’t just admiration or friendship—it was something deeper. something he wasn’t quite ready to admit to himself yet, but it was there, growing stronger every day.
as he lay in bed that night, jake stared up at the ceiling, his thoughts racing. heeseung’s smile, his laugh, the way he made jake feel safe... it was all starting to make sense now. jake liked heeseung. more than just a friend.
