Dr. Alexander noticed Bernadette's unusual behavior over the past few days. She had become increasingly withdrawn, rarely leaving her room, and he could hear her sobbing quietly through the door. Concerned for her well-being, he decided to reach out for professional help.
He picked up the phone and called Dr. Cherene, a psychiatrist and a friend of Bernadette’s.
Dr. Alexander: “Hi, Cherene, it’s Alexander. I’m sorry to call you like this, but I’m really worried about Bernadette. She’s been shutting herself in her room and I can hear her crying. I think she needs professional help.”
Dr. Cherene: “I understand, Alexander. I can come by and see her. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Dr. Alexander: “Thank you so much. I’m glad you can come. I’m really concerned about her mental state.”
Dr. Cherene:“I’ll be there shortly. Just hang in there, and try to be as supportive as you can in the meantime. I’ll do my best to help her.”
After ending the call, Dr. Alexander prepared to greet Dr. Cherene and hoped that her visit would bring the professional insight and support that Bernadette needed during this challenging time.
Dr. Cherene arrived at Dr. Alexander's place, and he greeted her with a worried expression.
Dr. Alexander: “Thank you for coming, Cherene. I’ve been really concerned about Bernadette. She’s been in her room for days and I can hear her crying. I hope you can help her.”
Dr. Cherene: “I’ll do my best. Please, show me to her room.”
Dr. Alexander led Dr. Cherene to Bernadette’s room and gently knocked on the door before opening it slightly.
Dr. Alexander: “Bernadette, Cherene is here. I’m going to let her in now.”
Bernadette, looking pale and exhausted, was lying on the bed. She glanced at the door as Dr. Cherene entered, her face a mixture of relief and apprehension.
Dr. Cherene: “Hello, Bernadette, my friend...how are you?”
Bernadette nodded silently, her eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and vulnerability. Dr. Cherene took a seat beside her, ready to offer support and begin their conversation.
Dr. Cherene: “Bernadette, I know things have been incredibly tough lately. I’m here not just as a psychiatrist but as a friend. I want to understand what you’re going through and help you find a way forward. Can you tell me what’s been on your mind?”
Bernadette sat up slowly, her gaze fixed on the floor as she struggled to find the right words.
Bernadette: “It’s just… everything feels so overwhelming. The trial, Maxim’s testimony, and the constant pressure… I don’t know how to handle it all. I feel like I’m trapped and no matter how much I try, I can’t escape these feelings.”
Dr. Cherene: “It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed. This is a lot for anyone to handle. Sometimes, just talking about what you’re feeling can help. What specific parts of the trial and everything that’s happened are bothering you the most?”
Bernadette: "Maxim’s testimony really shook me. Hearing him speak about our past, and how everything has come to this… I thought I was prepared, but it’s like it all hit me at once. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Dr. Cherene: “It sounds like Maxim’s words brought up a lot of painful memories and emotions. It’s important to acknowledge those feelings. Have you found any moments of peace or relief recently, even small ones?”
Bernadette:“Not really. I try to keep busy, but it doesn’t help much. I feel like I’m just sinking deeper.”
Dr. Cherene: “It’s okay to feel like this. It’s a sign that you’re processing a lot. Let’s focus on finding ways to help you cope. Sometimes small steps, like establishing a routine or finding little moments of self-care, can make a difference. I’d like to work with you to create a plan that feels right for you.”
Bernadette looked up, her eyes reflecting a hint of hope.
Bernadette: “I’d like that. I just don’t want to feel like this anymore.”
Dr. Cherene: “We’ll take it one step at a time. Remember, you’re not alone in this. We’ll work through it together. And Alexander and I will be here to support you every step of the way.”
Dr. Cherene’s soothing presence and empathetic approach helped to ease some of Bernadette’s immediate distress, providing her with a glimmer of hope and a plan to start moving forward.
After their conversation, Dr. Cherene took out a notepad and began writing a prescription.
Dr. Cherene “Bernadette dear, I’m going to prescribe a medication to help stabilize your emotions and provide some relief from the overwhelming feelings you’re experiencing. It’s important that you follow the dosage instructions carefully and continue to let me know how you’re feeling.”
She handed Bernadette the prescription.
Dr. Cherene: “This medication will help manage your symptoms, but it’s also crucial to combine it with ongoing support and therapy. We’ll work together to ensure you have the tools and strategies you need to cope effectively.”
Bernadette took the prescription, nodding with a mix of gratitude and apprehension.
Dr. Alexander: “Thank you so much for coming, Cherene. Your support means a lot. I’ll make sure that Bernadette takes her medication as prescribed and follows up with you as needed.”
Dr. Cherene: “I’m glad I could help. It’s important to stay on top of the medication and therapy. If there’s anything else you need or if Bernadette has any questions, don’t hesitate to call me.”
Dr. Alexander: “I’ll keep you updated on her progress and ensure she sticks to the plan. Thanks again for everything.”
Dr. Cherene: “You’re welcome. Take care, and I hope things start to improve soon.”
As Dr. Cherene left, Dr. Alexander turned back to Bernadette, reassuring her once more.
Dr. Alexander: “I’m here for you, Bernadette. We’ll get through this together, and I’ll make sure you take your medication and follow the plan.”
Bernadette nodded, feeling a bit more supported as she prepared to take the first steps towards managing her emotions and moving forward.
Bernadette, overwhelmed with emotion, looked at Dr. Alexander with tear-filled eyes.
Bernadette: “Thank you, Alexander. I don’t know how I would manage all this without you. I’m so grateful for your support and understanding.”
Tears streamed down her face as she reached out to him.
Dr. Alexander: “You don’t have to thank me, Bernadette. I’m here for you because I care about you. We’ll get through this together. Just take things one step at a time.”
He gently hugged her, providing comfort and reassurance. As she clung to him, the support and care from Dr. Alexander helped ease some of the weight she had been carrying, offering her a sense of hope and solace.
