The day had been ordinary enough—classes, a bit of homework, and the usual excitement bubbling up about the upcoming volleyball practice. But for Bokuto, there was something else brewing inside him, something he had been thinking about for days.
He was finally ready to confess to Y/N. Little did he knew, Y/N had also decided to confess to him.
As the volleyball team began warming up in the gym, Bokuto felt a mixture of excitement and nerves churning in his stomach. His eyes kept darting to the door, waiting for the moment when Y/N would walk in to watch practice like she usually did.
Konoha, ever observant, caught on immediately. "You look jittery, captain. What's going on?"
Bokuto flashed him a grin, but there was a hint of anxious energy behind it. "I'm gonna do it, Konoha. I'm finally gonna confess to Y/N."
Konoha's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh? Today? Right now?"
Bokuto nodded firmly. "Yeah, it's time. I've waited long enough."
Konoha smirked. "Alright then. Good luck. We're all rooting for you."
Bokuto took a deep breath, determined to make this confession perfect. He had been practicing what he was going to say in his head all day. But as fate would have it, things were about to take a slightly unexpected turn.
Later during practice, Y/N finally arrived, quietly slipping into the gym and taking her usual spot on the bleachers. She smiled softly as she watched Bokuto, her heart always fluttering a bit when he was on the court. She loved how alive he seemed when he was playing, his infectious energy lighting up the entire gym.
YOSHH!
Bokuto noticed her immediately, his heart doing a little flip. He couldn't help but flash her one of his signature wide grins before returning his focus to the practice match.
But as luck would have it, in the heat of the moment, Bokuto's focus wavered. He launched himself into a powerful spike that went just a bit off-course. The ball soared through the air in an unintended direction—straight toward the bleachers.
Before Y/N could react, the volleyball slammed into her face, sending her sprawling backwards in shock.
The entire gym fell silent, everyone holding their breath.
"Oh no," Bokuto whispered, his eyes widening in horror. "Not again..."
The scene felt eerily familiar, taking him right back to the day they had first met—the day he had accidentally hit her with a ball. It had been the start of their entire relationship, and now, here they were again.
Bokuto sprinted over to her side, his heart pounding in his chest. "Y/N! Are you okay?! I'm so, so sorry! I didn't mean to—"
Y/N sat up, rubbing her face with a wince, but she was smiling. "You really know how to make an impression, don't you?"
Bokuto froze, blinking in surprise at her lighthearted response. Then, despite himself, he laughed, relief washing over him.
"You're not mad?" he asked, his voice still laced with concern.
Y/N shook her head, still grinning. "How could I be mad? This is kind of... our thing now, isn't it?"
Bokuto couldn't help but chuckle, though his heart was still racing for a completely different reason now. She was okay, and she was still smiling at him—that was all that mattered.
Taking a deep breath, Bokuto knew this was the moment. Maybe it wasn't the grand, perfectly executed confession he had planned, but in its own weird way, it was perfect.
"Y/N," Bokuto started, his voice a bit shaky but full of determination. "I've been meaning to tell you something for a while now."
She blinked up at him, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "What is it?"
W-Wait?! Is he confessing to me too?!
Bokuto hesitated for just a second before his emotions spilled out.
"I like you, Y/N. I've liked you for a long time. You're amazing, and every time I'm with you, I feel like I'm a better version of myself. You're always on my mind, and... I just wanted you to know that."
The gym fell silent again, all eyes on Y/N as they waited for her response. Even the coach, managers and the volleyball team had quietly gathered around the edges of the court, watching the scene unfold with bated breath.
For a moment, Y/N just stared at Bokuto, processing his words. Then, her face broke into the brightest smile Bokuto had ever seen.
"I like you too, Bokuto," she said softly, her eyes shimmering with emotion. "I've liked you for a long time. You're the sweetest, most genuine person I know, and I'm so glad we met—both times," she added with a teasing wink.
Bokuto's face lit up with pure joy, his heart soaring. He couldn't help himself—he pulled Y/N into a tight, jubilant hug, lifting her off the ground and spinning her around.
"A-And...you can call be Kotaro," he said, blushing.
"O-Okay....K-Kotaro," she responded, also blushing.
The team erupted into cheers and applause, whooping and hollering at the sight of their captain finally confessing his feelings. Konoha clapped the loudest, grinning from ear to ear. "Finally! I've been waiting for this!" while he wiped away his faked tears.
Washio chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "Leave it to Bokuto to confess by knocking her over with a volleyball."
"Congratulations, Bokuto-san and Y/N-san" Akaashi congratulated them.
"BOKUTO!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!" the coach exclaimed with tears in his eyes. (wow he can be dramatic too)
But for Bokuto, nothing else mattered. He held Y/N close, laughing with pure happiness, knowing that this was just the beginning of something wonderful.
As they stood there, wrapped up in each other's arms with the entire team cheering them on, Bokuto couldn't help but think that, in the end, the most important moments in life didn't always go as planned.
Sometimes, they turned out even better.
