"You can't keep doing this Nova!" Noa shouted at me from the top of the stairs. "It's too dangerous, I can't keep spending our money on bailing you out and clearing your name. We're going to go broke."
"Who do you think is making all that money Noa? Who do you think is paying for all of this?" I shouted back. "Me! It's my ass that gets behind that wheel every week to pay for all our shit." I said as I climbed the stairs.
"It's dangerous Nova, don't you see that? I'm going to lose you to a car!" She said.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and took a deep breath, ever since I got into an accident a year ago, Noa has been paranoid I'll die behind the wheel. No matter how much I reassure her I'm fine and I can handle this.
"Baby, please listen to me, I'm fine. I'm still breathing how much more should I reassure you?" I asked her softly as I took my hands into hers.
"Don't race anymore Nova, our lives aren't worth it, your life isn't worth it." She pleaded.
I chuckled. "I can't promise that racing makes me feel free. More than anything." I said.
"Nova, if you love me, even the smallest bit like you did back in college and high school, you won't go tonight." She said, her dark green Bambi eyes looking into my deep brown siren eyes.
"I love you just as much as I did back then but I can't give up racing. It's all I have." I said.
Tears welled in her eyes in front of me and I almost felt bad. I love Noa so much but giving up the one thing I'm good at isn't something I'm willing to do.
I could give her everything and more if I stick with this, I could give her the life I know she deserves and she deserves more than this.
"You have me, don't go," she asked softly, tears threatening to escape her eyes. "please Nova, don't go for me, please." She pleaded.
I stuttered my words before I could speak. "I can't Noa," I said as I cupped her face gently. "I love you too much to stop going,"
She stepped out of my touch and moved away from me. "If you go tonight Nova I swear to God I won't be here when you come back, we'll be done." She threatened.
I chuckled. "You don't mean that," I said.
"Trust me, I won't be here." She wiped the tears that spilled onto her cheeks vigorously and her face went cold. "I have too much self-respect to keep worrying about whether or not I'll get a call from a hospital again or not when you don't worry about how it makes me feel." She said.
I was stunned and quiet for a moment. "You don't mean that Noa, I'm fine, I'm literally standing right in front of you," I said.
"Try me Nova, walk out of that door and you can lose my number, I won't be here." She said angrily.
