The rain began as a light drizzle, the kind that gently tapped against the windows and left a misty sheen on the streets. But as the evening wore on, the drizzle grew into a heavy downpour, the sky darkening as thunder rumbled in the distance. The sound of the rain beating against the roof and windows filled the small apartment, creating a backdrop of tension that mirrored the storm brewing inside.

Evelyn and Jacob had been treading carefully around each other since her return to the hospital. The brief period of hope had been shattered, leaving them both feeling raw and vulnerable. The sense of impending doom hung over them like a cloud, and every word, every glance, was loaded with unspoken fears and frustrations.

Evelyn sat on the couch, staring blankly at the television, though she wasn't paying attention to what was on. The dull ache in her bones had returned, and with it, a deep, gnawing fear that she couldn't shake. Her thoughts were a chaotic swirl of anxiety, and she felt a tight knot of tension in her chest that made it hard to breathe.

Jacob was in the kitchen, pacing restlessly as he tried to make himself a cup of tea. His mind was racing, filled with a mixture of anger, fear, and exhaustion. The weight of the past few months was crushing him, and the pressure of trying to hold everything together was becoming unbearable.

The tension between them had been simmering for days, and it was only a matter of time before it boiled over. They had been through so much together, but the strain of Evelyn's illness had pushed them to their limits, and neither of them knew how to navigate the storm that was about to break.

It started with something small—something that, on any other day, might have been brushed aside. Jacob came into the living room, a mug of tea in his hand, and noticed that Evelyn had left a pile of unopened mail on the coffee table. His nerves were already frayed, and the sight of the clutter sent a flash of irritation through him.

"Evelyn, why haven't you opened these?" Jacob asked, his voice sharper than he intended as he gestured to the stack of mail.

Evelyn turned to him, her brow furrowing in confusion. "I just didn't get to it," she replied, her tone defensive. "I've had other things on my mind."

Jacob set the mug down on the table with a little too much force, causing the liquid to slosh over the rim. "You've had other things on your mind? Evelyn, these could be important! You can't just ignore things like this!"

Evelyn's eyes narrowed, the frustration that had been building inside her finally bubbling to the surface. "I'm sorry if I'm not keeping up with everything, Jacob, but I've been a little preoccupied with the fact that I might be dying!"

The words hung in the air like a slap, and Jacob froze, the full weight of her statement crashing down on him. He had been so focused on keeping everything together that he had lost sight of what Evelyn was going through—of the fear and pain that had been consuming her.

But instead of softening, his own frustration flared in response. "And do you think I don't know that, Evelyn? Do you think I haven't been terrified every single day? I'm doing everything I can to take care of you, but it feels like you don't even care!"

Evelyn's heart pounded in her chest, a mix of hurt and anger swelling inside her. "Don't you dare say that I don't care, Jacob! I'm the one who's going through this, the one who's sick! I don't have the energy to keep up with every little thing, and I'm sorry if that's not good enough for you!"

Jacob's anger surged, the stress and exhaustion of the past few months finally boiling over. "You're right, Evelyn—you're the one who's sick! But you're not the only one who's been affected by this! I'm doing everything I can, but it never seems like enough! I'm drowning, and it feels like you don't even see that!"
