CHAPTER 12

best friend

"Who else will take that picture for you just to get revenge?

You're just as psycho as me, just as sick inside the head

So when they ask, I've always said

That's my fuckin' best friend"

The door slammed shut behind Lando, leaving Renée standing alone in her hotel room. The silence that followed was suffocating, thick with unspoken words and emotions she couldn't quite process. She clenched her fists, trying to keep the tears from falling, but it was no use. She'd been holding it together ever since their argument started, and now that he was gone, the dam finally broke.

Dammit," she muttered to herself, wiping at her eyes furiously. She couldn't believe how everything had spiraled out of control so quickly. One moment, she thought they might be able to talk things through, and the next, she was shoving him out the door.

She didn't have time to dwell on it. Her fingers were already flying over her phone screen, calling the one person she knew would help her get through this-Olivia.

The phone barely rang before Olivia's concerned voice came through. "Renée? What's going on? Are you okay?"

Renée took a shaky breath, trying to sound less wrecked than she felt. "Liv, I need you. Can you come to my room? Like, right now? And bring some junk food."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, and then Olivia responded with the kind of determination that only a best friend could muster. "I'm on my way. Give me five minutes."

Renée hung up and collapsed onto the edge of the bed, staring at the floor. Her mind was a jumbled mess of anger, hurt, and confusion. She kept replaying the argument in her head, wishing she could have said something different, something that might have made Lando stay instead of leaving in anger.

But then again, why should she have to chase after him? He was the one who had been keeping things from her, who refused to be honest even when she confronted him. No, he didn't deserve her tears. Not after everything.
