CHAPTER 16

emails i can't send

"There's no us in us when I'm lacking trust
You wanna discuss, ugh
You disgust me
Don't make me cuss you out
Why'd you let me down?
Don't say sorry now"

The late afternoon sun bathed the Saudi Arabian skyline in a soft, golden light, casting long shadows across the desert landscape as Renee stared out of her hotel window. The city stretched out before her, a maze of modern skyscrapers and ancient sands, each structure gleaming with the warmth of the setting sun. The distant hum of traffic blended with the occasional gust of wind, a stark contrast to the high-octane energy that had pulsed through the circuit earlier that day.

The 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was in full swing, and the day had been nothing short of a whirlwind. Practice sessions had seen the drivers pushing their cars to the limit, the air thick with the scent of burning rubber and adrenaline. Renee had spent most of the day in the Mercedes garage, her eyes glued to the monitors as George and Lewis tore through the practice sessions. The roar of the engines had reverberated in her chest, a constant reminder of the power and precision at play. George had done well—fifth in both sessions—and despite the exhaustion tugging at her, Renee couldn't help but feel a swell of pride.

But now, as the adrenaline of the day ebbed away, a heavy silence filled her hotel room. She had imagined this weekend would be different—an exciting, glamorous escape from her usual routine. Instead, it had been a lonely affair. Her friends were all scattered across the globe, too busy to join her. Carmen had been her last hope, but even she was tied up with commitments back in Europe, leaving Renee to navigate the unfamiliar territory of the paddock alone. The thought of joining George and his friends had crossed her mind, but the idea of being the only girl in a group of unfamiliar faces made her stomach churn with anxiety.

She let out a sigh, the loneliness seeping into her bones as she stared at the email drafts on her laptop screen. The only solace she found was in her music. Her latest single, "History of Man," had dropped earlier that day, and the reception had been incredible. Fans from all corners of the world were flooding her social media with praise, their excitement palpable even through the screen. Despite the positive feedback, the high of the release couldn't fully erase the lingering loneliness that hung over her like a dark cloud.
