CHAPTER 9
see you again
"Wonder if you look both ways
When you cross my mind, I said, I said
I'm sick of, sick of, sick of, sick of chasing
You're the one that's always running through my daydreams, I-
I can only see your face when I close my eyes"
Lando's POV
Lando stepped out of the meeting room, blinking against the midday sun as it hit his eyes. The Bahrain heat was as intense as he remembered, but that was far from the most pressing thing on his mind. The first qualifying session of the season loomed ahead, and every small detail of their strategy needed to be executed perfectly.
He pulled out his phone, checking the time. A few minutes to breathe before suiting up. He scrolled through his notifications absentmindedly until a familiar voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
Renee.
Lando's stomach flipped as his eyes landed on her, standing not too far away, talking animatedly with someone from the Mercedes garage. Her laugh rang out, light and carefree. For a brief second, he found himself frozen, caught between a wave of nostalgia and the reality of the situation. Seeing her brought back a flood of memories he wasn't ready to face, especially not now.
"Shit," Lando mumbled under his breath. The last thing he needed was an awkward encounter before qualifying.
Instinctively, he turned back toward the building, hoping to sneak inside before she noticed him. But the paddock was buzzing with activity, people moving in and out of the building in every direction. There was no discreet way back in.
Groaning inwardly, Lando shifted his focus to the outside, blending in with the crowd as best he could. He lowered his head, trying to keep his face hidden as he navigated through the sea of people. Every few steps, he risked a glance toward Renee, but she hadn't seen him yet. His heart raced as if he was already in the car, pushing for a fast lap.
Desperate to avoid her, he spotted the McLaren building up ahead. But what really caught his eye was the large bin sitting just outside of it.
"This is so stupid," Lando muttered to himself. With no better option, he ducked behind the bin, crouching low and trying to disappear from view.
