Wren was wrong.

Like Jack, she was a fixed point in time.

That chip from Van Statten was reversible under the condition of death and he...would never let that happen to her.

But that was the thing: she was wrong, just like Jack.

Every fibre of the Doctor's being screamed at him to run away from her, to leave her in some obscure and forgotten corner of the universe for someone else to deal with.

And he almost had, several times.

Tested it once on the Game Station back with his old face, but she had just turned up again with Jack.

And the poor thing, she was terrified that that was going to be the new normal.

Where he would try and avoid her at every turn and she would be left screaming for him to come back.

And honestly, that scared him.

Was that was he'd been reduced to? What he'd reduced her to?

Nothing but an obstacle, an object to avoid at all cost.

No.

No, he loved her. Still loves her.

And he swore he would never ever leave again.
