The Doctor loved his companions.

His companions loved him.

But there were days where they would go on adventures, when he was so close to losing them.

He had to remind himself that they were grown up. They were adult humans (most of the time anyways), not children or...babies to huddle close and dote over.

They were reckless, stupid, arrogant...yet brash and beautiful and curious at the same time.

It was a bit of a trick, he supposed. Balancing the overprotectiveness and the lack of.

Let them get hurt but be there to help fix it.

Let them fall but be there to catch them.

There had been cases where...he maybe forgot to put that 'safety net' down, or he caught them too late.

Where they got stuck, got hurt, got trapped somewhere he could not reach.

And those moments tore at him.

They clawed and tugged at his hearts, and he could only look on in horror...

What else could he do?
