Taehyung hadn’t been in the Kim household for long, but he was already starting to fall into a routine. His anxiety had not lessened, but the routine gave him a small sense of control in an environment that still felt foreign and frightening.
One morning, Jin suggested that Taehyung help him with preparing breakfast. Jin had noticed that Taehyung always tried to be useful, and he thought maybe cooking together might help him relax a little.
“Taehyung, how about you help me in the kitchen today?” Jin asked with a warm smile. “We can make pancakes. I think everyone would like that.”
Taehyung hesitated. He didn’t want to refuse Jin, who had been nothing but kind to him since he arrived. “Y-Yes, s-sir,” he whispered, keeping his eyes downcast.
Jin’s heart ached hearing Taehyung call him “sir,” but he didn’t correct him this time. He knew it would take time for Taehyung to feel comfortable calling him anything else.
In the kitchen, Jin showed Taehyung how to mix the pancake batter, keeping the conversation light and casual. Taehyung was tense, but he followed Jin’s instructions carefully, not wanting to make any mistakes.
As they worked, Taehyung tried to focus on the task, but his anxiety made his hands tremble slightly. He knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. In his mind, this was a test, just like all the others he had failed in the past. What if he did something wrong? What if they got angry with him?
Jin handed Taehyung a plate to set on the counter. “Tae, could you put this over there?”
Taehyung nodded, taking the plate with both hands. But as he turned to place it on the counter, his trembling hands betrayed him. The plate slipped from his grip and shattered on the floor, the sound of breaking porcelain echoing through the kitchen.
Taehyung froze, his eyes widening in horror. His breathing became rapid and shallow as he stared at the broken pieces scattered around him. The memories of his past surged forward, overwhelming him. He could already hear the yelling, feel the blows that would come next.
Jin quickly looked over at the sound, concerned. “Tae, it’s okay—”
But Taehyung didn’t hear the rest. His body began to shake violently, and tears welled up in his eyes. “I-I’m s-sorry, s-sir, s-sorry” he stammered, his voice breaking as he dropped to his knees, frantically trying to pick up the pieces with his bare hands. “I-I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
“Taehyung, stop!” Jin rushed over, kneeling beside him. “It’s okay, it’s just a plate! Don’t worry about it!”
But Taehyung was lost in his panic. His breaths came out in ragged gasps as he tried to gather the broken pieces, his fingers trembling so much that he couldn’t get a proper grip. “P-Please don’t hurt me… I-I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to… I’ll clean it up… I’m sorry....P-Please don't p-punish me... I- I will do anything p-please…”
Jin’s heart broke as he watched Taehyung spiral into a panic attack. He gently took Taehyung’s hands, stopping him from hurting himself on the sharp shards. “Tae, it’s okay. I’m not mad, I promise. You’re safe here. Please, calm down.”
Taehyung’s vision blurred with tears, and he flinched at the contact. His body shook as he tried to pull away, his mind trapped in the terror of his past. “N-No… please… don’t… don’t punish me… I’m sorry…”
Jin felt tears sting his own eyes as he realized just how deep Taehyung’s trauma ran. He pulled Taehyung into a gentle embrace, careful not to startle him further. “Tae, it’s okay… It’s just a plate. I’m not angry. You’re safe. You’re safe with us.”
But Taehyung couldn’t process Jin’s words. He was too consumed by his panic, his breath coming in short, desperate gasps. He clung to Jin’s shirt, his fingers gripping the fabric as if it were the only thing keeping him grounded.
Jin held Taehyung tightly, trying to soothe him. “Shh, it’s okay… Just breathe, Tae .. baby… You’re safe… We love you, and no one will ever hurt you again…”
It took several minutes, but eventually, Taehyung’s sobs began to subside. His breathing, while still shaky, started to slow down. Jin continued to hold him, whispering soft reassurances until Taehyung was calm enough to respond.
“Why… why are you so kind to me?” Taehyung whispered, his voice hoarse from crying. “I… I don’t understand…”
“Because you’re our brother, and we love you,” Jin replied, his voice steady but full of emotion. “You don’t have to do anything to earn our kindness, baby. We just want you to be happy and safe.”
Taehyung couldn’t respond. His mind was still struggling to accept the idea that anyone could love him, especially after everything he had been through. But as he clung to Jin, a small part of him desperately wanted to believe it was true.
Jin gently helped Taehyung to his feet, still holding him close. “Let’s get you cleaned up, okay? Don’t worry about the plate. It’s not important. You are.”
Taehyung nodded weakly, allowing Jin to guide him away from the mess. As they walked, Taehyung couldn’t help but glance back at the shattered pieces on the floor, his heart still heavy with fear. But for the first time in a long while, there was also a tiny glimmer of hope, buried deep beneath the layers of trauma.
Maybe, just maybe, this time things would be different.
