The Kim brothers moved quickly, their hearts set on the small town where they believed Taehyung might be. The ride there was filled with a mix of anxiety and anticipation. Jungkook stared out the window, his mind racing with thoughts of what his Taetae hyungie might be like after all these years. He imagined a joyful reunion, but a part of him couldn’t shake the fear that Tae hyung might not be the same little boy they lost.
The town was quiet, almost too quiet, as they arrived. It was a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Seoul. The brothers had arranged to meet the investigator who had tipped them off about Taehyung’s possible location. He was an older man with a serious expression, but there was a kindness in his eyes that made Jin trust him immediately.
“I’ve been working on this case for years,” the investigator said as he led them down a narrow street. “When I first heard about the kidnapping, I was devastated that we couldn’t find the boy. But recently, I received some new information—someone who fits the description was seen in this area.”
Jungkook’s heart pounded as they approached a small, rundown house at the edge of town. The investigator paused in front of it, glancing back at the brothers. “If he’s here, he might not recognize you. He’s been through a lot.”
Jungkook swallowed hard, nodding in understanding. He knew that finding Tae hyung was just the first step. Reaching him, breaking through the walls he had built to protect himself, would be the real challenge.
Inside the house, Taehyung was busy with his chores. His hands shook slightly as he washed the dishes, his heart racing at the thought of making a mistake. He had learned to keep his head down, to avoid drawing attention to himself, but that didn’t stop the fear from creeping in. Every noise, every creak of the floorboards, made him flinch.
Suddenly, he heard a knock at the door—a sound that sent a jolt of fear through his body. His hands slipped, and the dish he was holding fell to the floor, shattering into pieces. Panic surged through him as he quickly knelt down to pick up the shards, his breathing quickening. He knew what would come next—the loud voices, the punishment. He tried to steady his trembling hands, but the fear was overwhelming.
Before he could clean up the mess, the door creaked open, and he heard footsteps approaching. Taehyung froze, his eyes wide with terror. He didn’t dare look up, too afraid of what he might see.
The investigator stepped into the room first, followed by Jin and the other brothers. As soon as they saw Taehyung, crouched on the floor with fear written all over his face, their hearts broke. He was so thin, so fragile, and his entire body was trembling. It was clear that he had been living in constant fear.
Jungkook’s breath caught in his throat. This was his brother—his beloved elder brother, the one he had dreamed about all his life. But seeing Taehyung like this, so scared and broken, was more than he could bear.
Jin stepped forward, his voice soft and gentle. “Taehyung, bear?” he said, trying not to startle him. “It’s okay. We’re not here to hurt you.”
Taehyung’s eyes darted up to Jin’s face, but he quickly looked away, his whole body shaking. He stuttered, trying to form words, but his fear was too great. “I-I’m sorry… I d-didn’t mean to… I’ll c-clean it up, p-please don’t—”
Jin’s heart ached as he knelt down beside Taehyung, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Tae. You don’t have to be afraid. We’re here to take you home.”
The mention of “home” made Taehyung’s eyes widen again, but this time with confusion rather than fear. He didn’t understand—what home? The only home he knew was this place, where he lived in constant fear of making a mistake. His mind raced, trying to comprehend what was happening, but the fear wouldn’t let him think clearly.
Yoongi, seeing how terrified Taehyung was, stepped forward and knelt beside Jin. “You don’t have to clean up anything, bear,” he said, his voice firm yet soothing. “We’re your family. We’ve been looking for you for a long time.”
Taehyung’s head was spinning. Family? It didn’t make sense. His family had never been kind, never treated him with the gentleness these strangers were showing him now. He couldn’t trust it—he had learned long ago that kindness was just a prelude to pain.
Jungkook, unable to hold back any longer, stepped forward and knelt down in front of Taehyung. “Hyung,” he said softly, his voice trembling with emotion. “It’s me, Jungkook. I’ve missed you so much.”
Something in Jungkook’s voice broke through the fog of fear that clouded Taehyung’s mind. He looked up, meeting Jungkook’s eyes for the first time. There was something familiar there, something that tugged at the deepest parts of his memory. But he was so scared, so unsure, that he couldn’t fully grasp it.
“I-I don’t understand,” Taehyung whispered, his voice shaking. “I’m n-not… I can’t…”
Jin squeezed Taehyung’s shoulder gently. “You don’t have to understand everything right now, Tae. Just know that we’re here for you. We’re your brothers, and we love you.”
The words were too much for Taehyung. Tears welled up in his eyes, and despite his efforts to hold them back, they spilled over. He had spent so many years suppressing his emotions, hiding his pain, but now, faced with the overwhelming kindness of these strangers—these brothers—he couldn’t hold back.
Jungkook reached out and gently pulled Taehyung into a hug. At first, Taehyung tensed, his body stiff with fear. But as Jungkook held him, whispering words of comfort, something inside him began to break. The walls he had built to protect himself started to crumble, and he found himself clinging to Jungkook, sobbing uncontrollably.
Jungkook held him tightly, his own tears falling as he whispered, “It’s okay, hyung. You’re safe now. I’m here, and I’m never letting you go.”
The other brothers gathered around, their hearts breaking at the sight of Taehyung’s pain. But they knew that this was the first step—the first step toward healing, toward bringing their brother back from the darkness that had consumed him for so long.
As Taehyung wept in Jungkook’s arms, he began to feel something he hadn’t felt in years—a glimmer of hope. It was fragile, like a tiny flame flickering in the darkness, but it was there. And as he clung to his brother, he allowed himself to believe, just for a moment, that maybe, just maybe, he could finally find his way home.
