Sophia paced back and forth in her apartment, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn't shake. The Starbucks incident with Ethan had rattled her more than she wanted to admit. Something just didn't add up, and she couldn't ignore the gnawing feeling that there was more going on than she knew.

She finally stopped pacing and grabbed her phone, dialing her mom's number. If anyone could give her a straight answer, it would be her.

"Mom?" Sophia said as soon as she heard the familiar voice on the other end.

"Hey, sweetie! How's university treating you?" Eleanor Bennett's voice was warm, tinged with the softness that always made Sophia feel at ease.

Sophia took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. "It's been... good. Really good, actually. But, um, I wanted to ask you something."

"Of course, honey. What's on your mind?" Eleanor asked, her tone instantly shifting to one of concern.

Sophia hesitated, unsure of how to phrase her question without sounding paranoid. "Do you think... do you think Dad would hire someone to keep an eye on me here? Like, undercover? I know it sounds crazy, but..."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Sophia's heart sank. Was her mom hiding something from her?

"Sophia, you know your father," Eleanor finally said, her voice measured. "He's always been a bit overprotective, but he knows how important it was for you to have this experience. I told him that you can be trusted, and I believe he listened to me. You're an adult now, and he knows you wanted to be a normal college student."

Sophia bit her lip, feeling a mix of relief and doubt. "So, you don't think he'd... you know... hire someone?"

Eleanor's silence stretched just a little too long for Sophia's liking. "Sophia, I believe he respected your request. But you know how your dad is. He loves you and worries about you, but I don't think he'd go that far. I think you can trust that he wants you to have this experience without interference."

Sophia's shoulders relaxed a bit, though the suspicion still lingered at the back of her mind. "Okay, Mom. Thanks. I just... I don't know, I had this weird feeling. But maybe I'm just overthinking it."

Her mother's voice softened even more. "You're in a new environment, sweetie. It's natural to feel uneasy at times. But trust yourself, and trust that your father and I both want what's best for you. You're capable of handling this."

Sophia smiled, feeling reassured, even if just a little. "Thanks, Mom. I really appreciate it."

"Anytime, darling. Call me if you need anything, alright? And remember, I'm always here for you."

As they ended the call, Sophia felt a mixture of comfort and lingering uncertainty. Her mother had always been the one to smooth things over, to make her feel safe. But there was something in her mom's voice-a slight hesitation-that Sophia couldn't ignore.

She sat down on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone. Her mom had reassured her, but what if there was something she wasn't saying? What if her dad had indeed gone behind her back? Sophia knew her father well enough to know he would never admit it, but her mom...

If her mom had found out, she would've told her, right? Or would she have kept it quiet to avoid a fight with her dad?

Sophia sighed, feeling more conflicted than ever. The incident with Ethan, her mom's vague reassurances-it all felt like pieces of a puzzle she couldn't quite fit together.

She shook her head, trying to push the thoughts away. Maybe she was overreacting. Maybe her mom was right, and she was just letting her nerves get the best of her.

But deep down, Sophia knew she couldn't let it go. Something wasn't right, and she was determined to figure out what it was-no matter what it took.
