Vice President William Bennett paced his study, phone pressed to his ear. The room was quiet except for the occasional rustle of papers and the ticking of a wall clock.“Ethan, how is she doing?” William’s voice was firm but carried a hint of concern.
On the other end, Ethan Collins responded smoothly, “She’s settling in well. Attending her classes and seems to be making friends. I haven’t noticed anything alarming.”
William sighed with some relief. “Good. Remember, keep an eye out for any potential suitors. She’s still my daughter, and I’d prefer to know who’s trying to get close to her. We don’t need any complications.”
“Understood,” Ethan replied. “I’ll make sure to vet anyone who shows interest.”
The call ended, and William placed the phone on his desk. Eleanor Bennett, who had been listening quietly from the doorway, stepped in.
“Who was that?” Eleanor asked, her tone casual but curious.
William looked up, a faint smile on his lips. “That was Ethan, the undercover student we hired to keep an eye on Sophia. Just checking in on her progress.”
Eleanor raised an eyebrow. “How’s she doing?”
“According to Ethan, she’s behaving well. Adjusting to university life without any issues so far.” William’s expression turned thoughtful. “I made it clear to Ethan that he should be vigilant about any guys trying to date her.”
Eleanor nodded, understanding the protective instinct but also seeing the challenge it posed. “Sophia did say she wanted to experience university life as a normal student. Doesn’t it feel a bit contradictory?”
William’s smile softened. “I know, but it’s a compromise. We’re giving her space while ensuring her safety. Ethan’s role is crucial in balancing that.”

Later, Ethan sat in his dorm room, reflecting on his role and his recent conversation with William. The room was sparsely decorated, with a few personal items and textbooks scattered around.
He glanced at the notes William had provided, making sure he was up-to-date on any details regarding Sophia. As he pondered, he thought about the young woman he was supposed to protect. The phone call had been more revealing than he’d expected.
He muttered to himself, “Sophia seems like a really nice girl. I would have understood if she was a troublemaker, but she’s not. She’s just trying to find her place and live a normal life.”
He picked up his phone, considering sending a quick message to Sophia to check in on how she was adjusting, but decided against it. For now, he would continue his role with discretion and respect for her privacy. His job was to keep her safe while allowing her to enjoy her university experience as much as possible.
As he prepared for his next class, Ethan couldn’t help but feel a growing respect for Sophia. Balancing his duties with his genuine admiration for her would be a challenge, but one he was determined to handle with care.
