◎ Cao Da Captured ◎
"Don't you worry about what your family will say?" Dong Jiaojiao asked, lying in Lu Jinzhu's arms.
Lu Jinzhu did not answer her question directly. Instead, he looked into Dong Jiaojiao's eyes and asked a question he had asked before.
"Wife, are you a spy?"
"Of course not!" Dong Jiaojiao replied instinctively.
Hearing this, Lu Jinzhu's lips curled into a slight smile.
He then adopted a serious tone and said, "Song Guangming also captured Deng Weidong and Lin Xiaoqiang. Do you know what they said?"
"What did they say?" Dong Jiaojiao sat up abruptly. "Why did you arrest them? Wasn't the investigation supposed to be about Lu Yao?"
Dong Jiaojiao tried to remain calm, but her reaction betrayed her.
"Song Guangming suspects you might be a spy and has been investigating you too," Lu Jinzhu explained.
Lu Jinzhu had initially hoped Dong Jiaojiao would voluntarily admit to the rice and apples issue. However, Dong Jiaojiao's response was not what he expected.
"Me? A spy? Then let's get a divorce. That way, Song Guangming won't suspect me anymore," Dong Jiaojiao said quickly.
"No way! I don't agree!" Lu Jinzhu felt as though he had shot himself in the foot. He had suspected that Dong Jiaojiao did not value him much, but he hadn't anticipated her immediate willingness to discuss divorce.
This was disheartening for Lu Jinzhu.
He quickly reassured her, "Wife, it's Song Guangming who suspects you. I have never doubted you. I've already scolded Song Guangming for it. Don't worry. As long as I'm here, no one will dare harm you!"
Despite his reassurances, Dong Jiaojiao remained uneasy.
"Did Deng Weidong and the others... confess?"
"They confessed. Unless someone is a top-level trained spy, they usually can't withstand the interrogation techniques used by the military."
Lu Jinzhu's words served as a reminder to Dong Jiaojiao: you wouldn't be able to withstand it either, so it's better to confess quickly so I can protect you better.
Dong Jiaojiao was indeed frightened, but she did not trust Lu Jinzhu fully at the moment. Therefore, she employed a different strategy. She softened her tone and snuggled closer to Lu Jinzhu, speaking in a sweet, coquettish manner:
"Darling, you have to believe me. I'm really not a spy. You'll protect me, won't you?"
Lu Jinzhu's eyes darkened as he held her close, sighing deeply and resignedly replying, "Yes."

Subsequently, Dong Jiaojiao did everything she could to captivate Lu Jinzhu. After their passionate encounter, Lu Jinzhu, watching her sleep, felt deeply conflicted and spent the night restless.
In the following days, Dong Jiaojiao behaved impeccably, balancing work and her role as a good wife while occasionally probing about the progress of the investigation. Every night she worked diligently until the early hours.
Lu Jinzhu, on the other hand, enjoyed the attention but felt disheartened. When would his wife trust him more?

On the last day of Lu Jinzhu's vacation, Cao Da was finally captured.
Cao Da, 44 years old, though past his prime, was robust with piercing hawk-like eyes that were unforgettable to those who had seen him.
