Arder's POV

I blinked as the lights in my room were very quickly flicked on.
"Arder, it's time for school!" My mom said, standing in my doorway with one finger on the light switch.
"I have developed a case of senoritis." I told her, very seriously, while pulling a few of my blankets over my head.
My mom rolled her eyes. "Don't make me step into your room." She said, sternly, but not without affection.
I peeked my eyes just over the covers to look at her. "How much time do I have?" I asked her.
She glanced over at the clock I had hand-painted to look like a cut from the trunk of a tree. "Thirty minutes." She said, walking up the stairs to wake my other siblings.
I looked up at the pride flag I had pinned to my ceiling, surrounded by fake vines and flowers I had also stuck up there. Various different types of string lights snaked across my ceiling, from the target pride brand of lights to a really long cord of small, warm yellow LED ones I had bought for like $20 off of Amazon.
I sighed and rolled out of bed, my feet landing on the ashen-colored hardwood as I stared at the three outfits I had laid out for the first day of my senior year.
Being a trans person, I always had at least two options for an outfit each morning. This time, there were three, with a feminine one, an androgynous one, and a masculine one, with makeup laid next to each outfit so I could grab it and go. I looked over the outfits, not only analyzing the choices I had made, but also how I felt that morning.
I ended up deciding on the more androgynous outfit, making the executive decision that if I couldn't decide how I wanted to present this morning, then everyone else could spend the day questioning my gender.
I picked up the outfit and the makeup, moving to my bathroom where I finally got to see what I was working with this morning. My body type remained as normal, standing at five feet, six inches, a body that was mostly slim, with some muscle I had worked hard for. My short, black, curly hair was sticking straight up in some places, with a few knots tangled in it. My gray eyes were clouded from sleep, but some excitement was beginning to peek through. My pale, however slightly tanned, skin was a result of my choice to spend most of my time outside. My lips were naturally pink, but chapped. My cheeks were naturally pretty rosy, however, that just means my face turns completely red even with a slight blush. I smiled in the mirror, and my slightly crooked teeth grinned back.
I grumbled at the sight of my hair. I'm going to have to spray my hair to fix that. I sighed, dropping my clothes on the bathroom floor as I picked up a spray bottle.
I quickly tamed my hair, tucking some of it behind my ears as my bangs fell over my eyes, just the way I liked it. I brushed my teeth, then got out of my Fortuna Music Program hoodie and my sweatpants.
I put on my outfit of choice. The outfit consisted of black cargo pants, but the black was faded from washing them, so now it was more of a dark gray. The pants were made high waisted with a black and silver belt. A few different sizes of chains were connected to my belt loops, and an emerald crystal was hanging from one of them as well. I also wore a cropped black tank top, with two snakes entwined in the center, one a jet black, and one a pure white. I also wore a green collared shirt, but in more of a flannel style with it open to show the cropped shirt I was wearing. I put on a key necklace, which was an old fashioned key on a bright green string. I also put on a few fidget rings, careful not to damage the black nail polish I had put on the night before.
I quickly put on concealer, chapstick, and some contour, before doing a quick cats' eye with an eyeliner pencil.
I quickly looked at my appearance and left the bathroom. Most people called my style emo, which I agreed with, but it was more of a cross between emo and grunge. I picked up my phone and disconnected it from the charger, and turned off my do not disturb. Instantly my phone was vibrating, with a groupchat my closest friends currently being the culprit.
I went upstairs, grabbing my black backpack off of the floor and picking up my burgundy colored drawstring bag I used for cross country.
I waved goodbye to my mom, and my little brother, who was still half asleep on the couch, and went outside to my sister sitting on the edge of our front porch just as the bus pulled up in front of us.
"Two seconds before being late." She said, deadpan as we walked toward it. "New record."
I flashed a grin at her. "I know! Hopefully I'm going to work it down to one by next week."
She cracked a smile, and we both got on the bus. I got into an empty seat, and pulled my black over the ear headphones out of my bag. I put on a random playlist just to vibe to, and opened the messages that I had missed.
The groupchat consisted of Melanie, Emery, Kya, and Millie. Melanie was my best friend, and teased me relentlessly. Emery was the mother of all of us. She had a bet that she wouldn't curse until college. I made her break that bet, and I'm still oddly proud of it to this day. Kya was Emery's girlfriend, and she and I often got into very long discussions about anything relating to the medical field. Millie was the definition of neutral chaos, where she would be calm and sweet one minute, and then would be managing to start a fire from a ceiling tile and the stone wall five seconds later.
They were all trading schedules, and I sent mine to the group chat as well.

I couldn't help but smile at my messages with my friends. I truly loved them all.
The bus pulled into the bus circle in front of Fortuna High School, where I attended. I stood up and got off the bus, walking into the mob of people working to get in front of the school. I quickly walked through the front doors and went up to the 1st floor, waving and smiling at the occasional person I knew who called my name. I made my way to the breakout space, which was really a bunch of couches the school put in like a weird balcony that looks over the gym. I appeared to be the last one to arrive, and I slid into a seat next to Melanie.
A few people I knew were also hanging out around the couch, mostly kids I knew from the theater and music students. I started talking to Griffin, who was a sophomore, a fellow trans man, and one of the sweetest people you would ever meet in existence.
All our heads abruptly jerked upward as the bell to start heading to the first period of the day rang. I got up, and Kya and I shared a smile as we started walking to HBS together. I had to look up to smile at her, because she was just over six feet tall.
Kya went into the classroom before me, and I stopped just before I entered. I let a smile spread across my face.
I didn't know how, but I knew this year would be one of the best years of my life.
I opened the door, and let it shut softly behind me, shutting out the loud sounds of the Fortuna High School hallway.
