Chapter 6

Arder's POV

When I walked into school tomorrow and over to the table, Kya waved me over as I fell into a bubble where I felt safe. The joy and happiness surrounding me created a warmth that I felt in my core. I brushed a bit of black hair out of my eye, as I began drawing with a marker on one of my hands.

I made a rose on the top of my hand, its stem circling around my wrist. Just under the stem with thorns, I drew a very tiny, almost unnoticeable, semi colon.

Emery raised an eyebrow at the rose, shaking her head. "That's just going to sweat off during the race after school today." She told me.

"It's sharpie, I would be so surprised if it did." I remarked.

"Don't blame me when you have black streaks running down your hands." She told me, and I shrugged.

As the bell rang, I got up with Kya to go to class.

After a discussion in human body systems about bone locations and directional terms, I waved goodbye to Kya and ran down the hall to second period.

I slid into my desk next to Millie quickly, bringing out my haul of treats for the day.

"Oh my god!" Mille exclaimed as I dropped the candies on my desk.

"Breakfast." I said simply, beginning to sort the candies.

A few seconds later, Casper entered and leaned his hands on my desk. "What do we have here?" He grinned, looking down at the mountains of candy.

"Breakfast," I repeated, "Want one?"

"That is not a healthy breakfast," Casper remarked, "but sure. Can I have this?"

He reached for a twix, which was my favorite candy. I hesitated, nearly reaching my hand out to stop him, but my tendency to be way too kind overtook what I wanted.

"Yeah." I nodded, forcing a small smile.

"People pleaser." Millie hissed in my ear, and I pinched her arm in retaliation.

I knew my people pleasing tendencies got in my own way. I knew it was unhealthy, too, but I enjoyed making people happy. People deserved to be happy, even if I did not deserve anything myself.

I shook off these unhappy thoughts as I plastered a fake smile on my face. Class began, so I gathered my candy and moved over to Casper's desk across the room.

"What poem is for today?" Casper said, as I leaned over to look at the presentation so far.

I thought over my two choices that were left. "Today let's do 'I Taste a Liquor Never Brewed', then tomorrow can be our final one." I told him, and Casper pulled up the poem. "This is one of my absolute favorites." I told him, quickly jotting down the poem into my notebook.

Casper's brow furrowed. "It seems really confusing," He said, scanning the poem.

I smiled. "It's about loving nature," I said. "and loving something that cannot nessicarily be completely held. Ever felt that before?"

Casper looked into my eyes. "I think so." He said, very softly, before turning back to his computer.

"Let's take it line by line." I said, twirling my pen in my fingers.

"What's that?" Casper asked, pointing to my wrist, at the semi colon.

"Oh, it's nothing." I brushed the question off, tugging my black jacket sleeve over it so it wasn't visible anymore. "Okay, first line."

I taste a liquor never brewed-
From Tankards scooped in Pearl-
Not all the Frankfort Berries
Yield such an Alcohol!

Inebriate of air- am I-
And Debauchee of Dew-
Reeling- thro' endless summer days-
From inns of molten Blue-

When "Landlords" turn the drunken Bee
Out of the Foxglove's door-
When Butterflies- renounce their "drams"-
I shall but drink the more!

Till Seraphs swing their snowy hats-
And Saints- to windows run-
To see the little Tippler
Leaning against the- Sun!

"So, it's basically about getting drunk on nature's beauty?" Casper asked, looking up at me after we had gone through it.

"At the surface, but it's also about getting drunk on love too." I said, tracing the letters of the poem. "Seeing something so beautiful, inside and out, that you want nothing more to keep looking at it, just being happy existing beside it-" I cut myself off, realizing I was going on a rant that was making me dangerously close to wanting to kiss Casper.

I looked into Casper's eyes, which were a colbalt blue color. They were gazing at my own, a mix of emotions, so quickly passing by I barely had time to process them. Admiration. Kindness. Empathy. Softness. Then there was some emotion I could not recognize in his eyes.

I shoved my thoughts away, clearing my throat and looking down at my notebook.

"So," Casper said, leaning back in his chair, but his fingers were drumming on the desk anxiously. "What's your friend situation like?"

"Uh," I stuttered, confused by this sudden change in topic. "I've got a group of close friends, and friends on the outside of that circle. Most of the kids who know me are theater kids. I'm not dating anyone or anything, and oh, some sports kids know me too."

Casper nodded, taking in the information. "You ready for the race today?" He asked.

I nodded. "I want to get under 21 minutes." I told him, "That's my goal, cause that gets me to sectionals."

He smiled "I'll be watching for you when I can." He assured me.

I processed the information, and nodded back. I shoved my notebook into my incredibly messy bag, and exited the classroom with Millie.
