My day classes passed by without any interest. Every once in a while, I'd feel my skin burn from someone else's gaze, and when I'd turn around to find the perpetrator, I'd be met with guilty eyes. However, that seemed to be the most of the drama that I had to suffer through. My previous anxiety about the first day back seemed over-exaggerated to the point I felt embarrassed about it. Now, as the final bell rang, I felt my shoulders relax. Maybe I was being too self-absorbed. Everyone else had their own lives to think and talk about, no one cared about my issues from last year. At least not enough to bring it up again.
Bon and Izumo waved me over and we walked out of the classroom. The three of us decided to accompany each other on our way to cram school. My friend and partner idly chatted about the homework we were assigned on the first day of school. Both of them sounded irritated but neither seemed surprised by it.
Bon pulled out his key before the rest of us could and inserted it into a door far away from the common area of campus. The lock unlatched and he opened the weathered wood before waving Kamiki through. "Ladies first," he stated with the air of a gentleman. My girlfriend scoffed but thanked him, regardless. The taller teen then turned to me before gesturing empathetically toward the threshold. "Madam."
I copied Izumo's actions and scoffed, holding back the urge to roll my eyes. Nonetheless, I played along. I reached down to grab my nonexistent skirt and gave Bon a curtsy before stepping into the hallway. "And they say chivalry is dead." I muttered as Bon latched the door behind us. The low timbre of his laugh echoed off the large expanses of the ornate hallway.
"Do you guys know what class we go to first?" I asked as we treaded over the marble tiles.
The girl beside me let out a long sigh before answering. "Exorcist's Etiquette."
The fuck is that?
.oOo.
As it turns out, the sigh she let out was for a good reason. As I sat next to her in the class, I found myself growing more and more confused and incredulous as our teacher spoke.
"There are many rules and guidelines with this profession as many of you already know." Our teacher was old, almost decrepit looking. If I wasn't so perplexed with the classes subject, I'd be more concerned with how someone of his age was teaching, let alone still an Exorcist. "While the our existence isn't rebutted, we remain a secret organization for many reasons. This class will be spent learning why you should keep your career choice hidden."
I turned to my left and hoped my features were just as confused as I felt. Pink lips pursed and she didn't even spare me a glance before shaking her head.
Who the hell signs up for this cram school without knowing this? Of course, most people came from families where there were long lines of Exorcists spanning back for generations. Everyone knew to keep it hushed, was a class like this even necessary? I sighed quietly and tuned back into the lesson.
The time seemed to pass by slowly, and maybe it was because the old man's room smelled like a funeral home, or maybe it was because his monotonous tone was anything by captivating. Either way, the class eventually came to an end and we had yet another gym class to attend. And I had to be out of practice with only working out during the summer, but all the exercise I've had today has me both mentally and physically exhausted by the time we reached our last class.
Shima had sat next to me almost immediately, and comically tried to spar with anyone who dared to come too close. As if he was claiming his position seated next to me this semester. As the warning bell rang, he sat down in his seat with a sigh and I quirked an eyebrow in his direction. He caught my gaze and gave me a lazy shrug. "Dude, you sat next to everyone else over the summer, I'm calling dibs this time."
