Ruhanika’s heart raced as she sprinted through the hospital corridors. Her shoes squeaked against the polished floor, the sound echoing through the silent halls. She could hardly see through the blur of her tears, but she didn’t stop. The only thing she could think of was her sister, Ruhi. Her mind replayed the moments before she heard the news: the phone call, her mother’s shaking voice, the dread that filled her heart when she understood something was wrong. Ruhanika’s lungs burned, but she didn’t care. She had to get to Ruhi.
Bursting through the waiting area, Ruhanika’s eyes darted around frantically. Relief washed over her when she spotted her parents, Neil and Aarohi, standing outside a room. They looked tense, their faces etched with worry. Aarohi’s hands were clasped together as if in prayer, while Neil was pacing, running a hand through his hair.
“Mumma! Papa!” Ruhanika cried out, her voice trembling. She skidded to a halt in front of them, out of breath and panicking. “Where’s Ruhi? Is she okay? Please tell me she’s okay!”
Neil quickly stepped towards his daughter, his arms reaching out to steady her. “Ruhanika, calm down,” he said softly, his voice soothing. “Ruhi is fine, beta. She’s inside. The doctors checked her over, and she’s just a little shaken up from the accident. Nothing serious, no major injuries.” His eyes, though kind, showed the stress he was under. It was clear that the news had shaken him as much as it had shaken Ruhanika.
Aarohi moved closer, wrapping her arms around Ruhanika, pulling her into a tight embrace. Ruhanika could feel her mother’s heart beating fast, a mirror of her own. “Thank God,” Aarohi whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. “When we got the call, I thought… I thought we might lose her.” She pulled back slightly, looking into Ruhanika’s eyes. “But she’s going to be okay, sweetheart. You don’t need to worry. Ruhi is a strong girl, just like you.”
Ruhanika took a shaky breath, trying to absorb her parents’ words. She could feel the tension easing a little. “Are you sure she’s okay, Mumma?” she asked softly, her voice still laced with worry. “I need to see her, I need to make sure.”
Aarohi nodded, brushing a tear away from Ruhanika’s cheek. “Of course, beta. You should go see her. She’s been asking for you since she woke up.” Aarohi glanced at Neil, then back at Ruhanika. “Your papa and I are going to the temple now. We want to perform a special pooja for Ruhi’s safety. It’s our way of thanking God for keeping her safe.”
Ruhanika watched as her parents turned to leave, their hands entwined, providing each other silent support. She admired their strength and faith, always turning to God in moments of crisis. As their figures disappeared around the corner, Ruhanika took a deep breath, steeling herself to face Ruhi.
Pushing open the door to Ruhi’s hospital room, Ruhanika’s heart clenched at the sight before her. Ruhi lay in the bed, looking so small and fragile against the white sheets. Her face was pale, her eyes slightly red, and there was a bandage on her forehead. The beeping of the heart monitor filled the room with a rhythmic sound that both comforted and unnerved Ruhanika.
“Ruhi!” Ruhanika’s voice cracked as she rushed to her sister’s side. Ruhi’s eyes opened at the sound of her voice, and a weak smile spread across her face. “Didi,” Ruhi whispered, lifting a hand toward Ruhanika.
Ruhanika grabbed Ruhi’s hand, holding it tightly as if afraid to let go. “I was so scared,” Ruhanika admitted, her voice breaking with emotion. “When I heard about the accident, I thought… I thought I might lose you, Ruhi. I can’t imagine my life without you.” Tears streamed down her face as she spoke.
Ruhi gave Ruhanika’s hand a gentle squeeze, her own eyes filling with tears. “I’m sorry I scared you, didi,” Ruhi said softly. “But I’m okay. Really. The car just bumped me a little. It wasn’t that bad.” She tried to sound reassuring, but Ruhanika could see the fear lingering in her eyes.
