Chapter 12
*Calley*
I sat in a room. I can’t really tell where or I was or what was happening, but down in my gut I knew it was a bad thing that I was here. I just had to hope that I would be able to do something.
I drew my cell phone out of my pocket and slid it open. No bars. Just like last time I did this two minutes ago. I stood up and walked around, staring intently at the screen. For a moment I saw a flash of one bar and I froze. Then the bar blinked back into existence. I nearly squealed with excitement. But I kept my mouth shut. I typed a panicky message to Liz.
“Should I send one to Zayden too?” I whispered to myself. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and slid my phone open quietly. The bar was still there and I clicked through my contacts. I typed out a small message to Zayden.
I put my phone back in my pocket and looked around. I guess the room was nice enough but I felt like I was going to vomit. I rested my forehead against the wall and listened. I was sort of scared to turn into another animal just in case people were watching.
“Hey,” someone whispered. “what are you doing?”
I jerked my head away from the wall and looked around. When I saw nothing I rested my head against the wall again, passing the weird experience off as my imagination.
“Hey!” The voice was back, and it was louder this time. “Put your ear against the wall. It’s easier than talking through your forehead.”
I pressed my ear against the wall and the person laughed.
“Wow, you’re smarter than the last person who was in that cell. A werewolf I think. Anyway, I’m Haru. I can use a weird form of telepathy. I have to talk, but people can hear me far away. I’ve been talking with a group of mine. Do you know about them. Shake your head yes or no.”
I shook my head. I had no idea what this Haru person was talking about. A group? Who?
“No? Hm. Well, I’ll keep asking yes or no questions until I figure out what you do know. Well, first off, are you a vampire?”
I shook my head again, wondering how this person could hear me shaking my head. Then I had an idea. I took a step back and used my finger to write the words “shape-shifter” on the wall. I pressed my ear back to the wall.
“Hm? You… you didn’t just say shape-shifter did you?”
‘No,’ I wrote on the wall. ‘I just used my finger to write on the wall. Pretty smart, huh?’
“Yeah!” Haru said. “I thought shape-shifters weren’t so smart, but boy was I wrong!”
‘WHAT’S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?’ I wrote.
Haru laughed. “Okay, more about me. I’m a guy. I know it’s kinda hard to tell through walls. But I have no clue what gender you are.”
‘Why do you want to know?’
“Just curious.”
‘Girl.’
“You won't be here long then,” Haru said grimly. “Girls always leave faster. I don’t know why. I can talk to them, but they can’t talk b-"
My phone-which was set on vibrate-vibrated. I jerked away from the wall and snapped open my phone, not bothering to be quiet. It was a text from Liz telling me what an idiot I was and that now I was going to die a slow and painful death. Yep, that definitely boosted my spirits. I pressed my ear against the wall again.
“What was that, a freaking taser?”
‘No,’ I wrote quickly. ‘just my phone.’
“You have a phone?” Haru asked hurriedly. “They didn’t take it from you? Why n- I mean... Would you send a text for me?”
