Summary: Set in the future. When Kat wakes up after escaping a prison world, she's human. She finds that Elijah is too, and is injured. Can she save him? Will they get back together?
Kat slowly awoke, on her back, having escaped a prison world, and saw that she was in the tunnels. Because she'd been human in the prison world, she was human again.
She slowly got to her feet, ignoring the pain from her minor prison world injuries, and looked around. That's when she saw that she wasn't alone.
"Elijah?" she called, and then approached. She then knelt down at his side, where he lay on his back. She saw that he was injured, which made her realize that he was human. She then rested a hand on the side of his face, before looking at what his injuries were. She saw a lower stomach wound, as well as a piece of wood protruding from his side. Everything else seemed to be visibly intact, apart from blood on the right side of his head.
She took her hand away from the left side of his face. Then took her jacket off. She then pulled the piece of wood out, tossing it to the ground, and used her jacket to tie around both wounds.
"Elijah, can you hear me?" she called to her ex, a hand on the side of his face, once more. "Elijah."
As she stayed in that position, trying to wake him up, she could hear commotion above. She assumed from the vibration, as well as the noise from the opening in the tunnel ceiling, there was an earthquake. She assumed there might have been one before, which could have been what had gotten him injured in the first place. She didn't allow herself to be emotional, though. She knew that wouldn't help her love of 500 sum years.
About ten minutes later, which was after the earthquake had stopped, she saw him finally wake up. She knew from the wounds though, that he'd lost a lot of blood. She didn't even know how long ago he'd gotten injured.
"Katerina?" he weakly inquired.
"I'm here," she told him, a hand still on the side of his face.
"What are you doing here?" he questioned.
"That's a long story. I'll tell you later. What do you say we get you out of here," she replied.
She slide an arm under him, helping him to his feet, as she put his arm around her shoulders. Then she headed in a direction, knowing which way would get them out of there, as she helped him the best of her ability. She wasn't a vampire anymore, so she didn't have her super strength anymore. She couldn't even heal. The only thing on her side right now was her knowing every inch of the New Orleans tunnels. She'd been here in the 90's long enough to memorize everything. Before her and Marcel had become enemies.
When she got above ground with him, she got him against a brick wall. After all of that through the tunnels, she couldn't do anymore without help, no matter how determined she was. She was only human. He was weaker than when he'd first awoken. But there were a couple people that had to still be in New Orleans.
She knelt by one of her greatest loves.
"Elijah, where's Klaus?" she asked, Klaus being the first person she thought of.
"Call Rebekah," he told her, too weak right now to tell her everything that had gone down. Plus, everything was going gray again.
Kat searched for his phone in his jacket, as he blacked out, and finally found it. Then she looked for her in his contacts. Right now, he was in no condition for her to ask him why she couldn't just get Klaus. Her priority was just getting someone that could help save him.
"Elijah," Rebekah greeted, when she answered the call, expecting to hear him.
"It's me," she replied.
"Katherine?" she questioned, surprised that she was alive again.
"If you can set aside your despisement of me, I need you to help save him. We're in the Quarter. I'll explain everything else later."
"I'm on my way," the blonde replied without hesitation. When it came to blood-related family, she'd be there, no matter what.
Kat hung up, before putting the phone back. Then waited for the blonde to arrive, as she rested a hand on the side of his face. Despite the way he'd left, she'd die for him. She still loved him, no matter what. She couldn't lose him. He was all she had left.
"Stay with me, Elijah. I'm not losing you, if I can help it," she called to him, hoping he could hear her. She knew how bad of shape he was in, after all. She'd lost her daughter. She wasn't going to lose him, too. She couldn't watch another person she loved die. Not Elijah. Not even Damon. No matter what, she'd always love them both. And she'd die for both of them, no matter what any of them thought of her.
About half an hour later, she was at the compound, seated on his bedside, waiting for him to wake up. Rebekah had healed him. Now, she just had to wait for him to wake up. She still had her prison world injuries, but she refused to take care of herself until he was awake. Or, in this case, be taken care of, since she knew Mikael had caused the hospital shut down in the 1900's. There was no hospital here. Unless they'd gotten a working hospital again. But she didn't know what had happened, nor had she asked the blonde. She'd rather hear it from Elijah.
When he awoke, he saw that he was home, in bed, healed, and saw Katerina on his bedside. He could feel her hand on the side of his face. Then he felt her take it away.
"Katerina," he greeted, before sitting up.
"I'm glad you're awake," she replied.
"You're injured," he noticed immediately.
"I escaped a prison world. When I woke up there, my priority was you. Not worrying about myself. I couldn't, and wouldn't just let you die," she explained. "How I ended up there is a long story," she added.
When she explained herself, he understood, obviously, but he didn't care to see her hurt, either. Then, when she told him everything that had happened years ago, he was inwardly unhappy at those responsible for her becoming human, and everyone for not trying to save her, and those that had caused her pain. And he hated that he hadn't checked up on her. Perhaps if he'd done things differently, she never would've died. At least, things had turned out, though. With them both human, they could start over. If she wanted it.
"Now that I told you everything, what did I miss?" she asked him.
Since he knew the type of person she was, he told her every single thing she'd missed.
"I'm glad he's finally dead then, because I'd kill him for what he did," she commented, talking about Marcel. Then she added, "I'm sorry about Klaus, though."
He knew that it had been years since she'd last been alive, but he hadn't expected her to have any sympathy over Klaus. It was a surprise to him. He didn't say it, though. He knew she knew he was shocked about that. He didn't have to say it.
Later, after she'd been tended to, they decided to leave off where they had years ago, getting back together. And this time, they left together, away from those they knew, to start their human lives together.
