Backupsmore was all she could afford, she was destined for greatness but shunned by her father's dislike of her intelligence. Women weren't meant to change the world, they were meant to change the sheets. She left them all behind, a suitcase containing everything meaningful to her; some clothes and a photo of her mom. She was breathing in the fresh air of a new start before bumping into someone, knocking him to the ground.
"Oh goodness, I'm so sorry are you alright?" She held out her hand to help him up
He hesitated before accepting and she could see why, a sixth finger on his hand, interesting but not enough to bring up.
"Yeah." He spoke like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop but when it didn't he sheepishly smiled at her "I'm Ford, are you on your way to orientation too?"
"Is it that obvious?" She sighed, he motioned to her suitcase before she could say anything more "Right, and you?"
"Yeah, do you wanna walk with me?"
"Sure." Walking side by side the click of her heels and the bustle of the other students filling their ears "I'm Dolore-Dolly, I'm Dolly Finch."
"A pleasure Dolly. What are you studying?"
"Oh you'd probably think I'm in over my head but I'm studying physics."
"Why would I think that?" He turned to her blue eyes looking her up and down confused
"Oh, because I'm a woman? Don't find many woman studying physics hey?" She explained fidgeting with her ring
"You look like you can handle yourself. I'm studying quantum physics and mechanics."
"So we may have a few classes together, good to know I'd know someone here."

"Oh god no my father hates the idea of me here, I'm a disgrace to the family and to him as a father." She looked into her mug of coffee
"My father was a hardass too." She smiled to him at that
"You don't understand this either right?" The brown library bookcases felt like they had tucked them away from the outside world
"Here," He showed her his work pointing out a few things
"Guess Backupsmore wasn't your first choice." She copied down his notes
"No, I was going to go to West Coast Tech, but that fell through."
"I applied but I couldn't bare to look at my letter, I was never going to be able to afford it even if I did get in."
"I would've had a scholarship." He sighed wistfully
"What happened?" She asked, he curled his fist remembering something "You don't have to tell me."
"No it's ok." He pulled out a photo of two young almost identical boys on a decrepit boat "This is my brother, Stanley. We were best friends but when we got older I was more interested in my studies and he, well he wanted to take our boat and never come back. But I was going to go to West Coast Tech, I was destined for greatness, I just had to show the representatives my perpetual motion machine...but Stanley he wanted me with him. He sabotaged the machine, it was a disgrace. I pulled the curtain and it had stopped, the judges just walked away and my future was ruined."
Dolly held his hand it obviously pained him to recount. He smiled down at it and continued on.
"He got kicked out, and I didn't do anything, I never saw him again."
"Oh Ford, I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine." She looked at him the tears that disappeared as soon as she saw them
"It's in the past, I just want to focus on graduating early."
"Cheers, to that the sooner I'm out of here the better." They clinked their coffee mugs together
"What are you gonna do after school?" He takes a sip of his coffee
"I'm not sure yet, something that makes a difference in the world." He nods in agreement before looking back down to his notes "We better keep studying."
Hey ya, this is my first time in years venturing back into the realm of fanfiction, after I went through a 'this is cringe' phase I have decided to embrace the cringe resulting in this! Dunno how often updates will be but I'm gonna try my best to be regular or just whenever I get motivation.
