——————"Why don't you just talk to him?"
Sarah had been watching Sam and Bucky dance around each other and their feelings for days on end; it was getting tiring to watch. She was sure, at this point, that even AJ and Cass had caught on about their uncle's feelings towards Bucky Barnes. He wasn't exactly subtle.Bucky on the other hand was a mess; every time Sam said anything nice to him, or even looked at him for long enough, he'd become a bumbling star struck idiot.
It was exhausting to witness, and Sarah just wanted them to get over themselves and talk about it."Talk to him? About what? I talked to him half an hour ago—" Bucky stammered, his eyes drifting to the open door, through which he could see Sam working outside. The late august sun shone on him, surrounding him in glowing light and highlighting him in a way Bucky expected angels to be.
Sarah groaned, "you are so stupid."
Bucky turned and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Hey... that's not very nice," he said.
Sarah rolled her eyes and gave him an annoyed look.
"Just— at least go and help him, please. That door isn't going to paint itself." With that, she picked up her cardigan off the chair and walked into the kitchen, soon out of sight.Bucky looked back at Sam, who looked to be taking a break on the porch. Bucky's heartbeat seemed to speed up just looking at him. With a deep breath, Bucky crossed the threshold. Sam was sitting on the steps of the porch with his back to him, and Bucky could hear a faint music coming from nearby. He took a step, and a creaky floorboard gave him away.
Sam turned, and his eyes seemed to widen a little at the sight of Bucky, who stood there sort of awkwardly, not knowing what to do with himself.
"Um... hi," he said.
"Hey," said Sam, nodding.
Bucky could now see that Sam was holding his phone, which was where the music was coming from.Neither said anything for a moment; Bucky really hoped Sam would say something to break the silence. It felt like it stretched on for an eternity.
When it seemed like Sam was going to do nothing but stare at him, Bucky said, "what are you listening to?"Sam smiled, patting the step beside him. Bucky felt a weight lifted off his chest.
"The Moon Will Sing, The Crane Wives," said Sam as Bucky sat down. Bucky assumed this was some new music that he had no idea about. While he had some knowledge, he hadn't had enough free time between taking down the flagsmashers and continuing to help Sam with missions to actually listen to any of today's music.
"Oh," Bucky said, staring at his hands. "Cool."
The music was quiet, but it sounded nice to Bucky's ears.Sam looked at his watch. "It's getting late, I need to get this door painted." He stood up again. Bucky felt his heart tug in disappointment; he wanted to just sit with Sam for longer.
"I can—" Bucky stumbled to his feet. "I can help."
Sam blinked at him, then smiled, "that would be great, thanks Buck."
Bucky smiled back. The two of them got to work; AJ was having a new door fixed for his bedroom, after an incident playing with the shield ended up with a massive hole gaping in his old one. Safe to say, Sarah keeps a close watch on that shield when it's ever in the house.
The sun was beginning to set, and the two of them weren't done. Bucky's clothes were now smattered with paint, but Sam's were no better. Bucky imagined they looked rather silly.
"Hey can you pass that paintbrush?" Sam asked. Bucky looked at the table beside him and saw about a dozen different, paint coloured paint brushes. He frowned.
"Which one?"
"The big one."
"There's three big ones."
Sam scowled, looking irked. "The biggest one!" He groaned. He put down his things and came around to Bucky's side of the workstation.
Bucky rolled his eyes, "they're the same size, Sam."
