As I expected, playing off that kind of mishap is in no way easy. When the party started right after the sun had set, everything seemed normal; In my opinion, at least. The normal glances of admiration when I entered the ballroom, the lively chat with nobles from Bengal; The normal experience when traveling for events such as these. I had insisted that Emile stay off to the side to not bring attention to himself and had Hikaru keep an eye on him just in case.

Of course, nothing ever stays simple in my life, does it? I picked up a glass of Arrack, a golden brown wine made from fermented coconut. I took a sip of the drink, surprised by it's strong flavor despite being from a coconut. Soft music and chatter filled my surroundings as guests waited for Sohma to arrive. Maybe it was from the long, uneventful trip, or the new, unfamiliar place, but I felt weirdly unlike myself.

Instead of already talking with multiple people, I was sitting at a table far off into a corner with my servants and Sebastian. "Why not join the crowd, Y/n?" Sebastian inquired, leant over as he was whispering in my ear. I turned to Sebastian, setting my champagne glass down on the table. "You know exactly why, Sebastian." I sighed, holding my head in my hand.

"I'm still struggling whether I should admit I have a demon hound as a servant or not. If I do tell and explain even some part of the story, who knows what the rumours would be like, and if I don't... oh, you know the rest." I sighed. A soft chuckle escaped from Sebastian's throat. "Really? Is the best thing to do in this situation mocking me?" I looked up at him.

"Y/n, my dear, listen to me. You and I know better than anyone here that high society is a brutal fate to be born into. Rumours will arouse for people from all walks of life no matter what they do." Sebastian placed his hands on my shoulders, trailing them down to my hands as he continued to speak. I felt a small smile tugging at my lips.

"Either way, rumours will arouse. We can only hope that the rumour dies down quickly. Just keep your head high like you always have. You're a strong queen, Y/n. You can handle a bit of talking." Sebastian assured me. I nodded, any amount of worry I previously held completely washed away. "Thank you, Sebastian. You always seem to know what to say." I stood from my chair and took another sip from my coconut wine.

"That's my Queen." Sebastian smiled and held his hand out for me. I took his hand and he pulled me out onto the dance floor. Just as we reached the middle of the ballroom, trumpets and sitars began to play a lively tune. Sebastian and I turned towards the sound as Agni became present in a dhoti with a matching cloth going from his shoulder and tucking into the waist of his dhoti at the top of a grand staircase.

"His Highness, Prince Sohma!" His loud voice bellowed. Big doors behind Agni were opened by guards and out came the happy prince. Just by looking at him, you could see just how excited he was. He was able to seem somewhat composed, though, as he started down the stairs. "Hello, everyone! I would like to thank you all for coming to my birthday ball!" He cheered when he reached the bottom of the stairs.

The crowd clapped in response. "May the festivities continue!" He declared, the crowd cheering once again. Everyone returned to their collective groups to chat while others danced the night away. 'My one attempt; Failed.' I sighed and continued walking across the ballroom to the sweets table.

"Drowning your sorrows in sweets, Y/n?" Soma inquired right before I could take a bite of an interesting looking cupcake. My eyes widened, as I hadn't expected him to come to me right away. I handed my cupcake to Sebastian and curtsied to Soma out of respect. "Finally, I can formally wish you a happy birthday, Soma." I smiled as I stood up straight once again.

"Thank you, Y/n. How wonderful it is that we are now both 18 years old." He smiled cheerfully. "Indeed. You finally caught up." I laughed softly, patting his shoulder. Soma's expression lowered as he sighed. He never favored when I mentioned our slight age difference, yet I found it endearing and quite the entertainment.

"Oh, do cheer up, Soma. I only tease." I continued laughing. Soma sighed once again and turned to me with a soft smile. "Alright, alright." I smiled back and turned to Sebastian to receive my cupcake, only to find it gone. "I never took you as one for sweets, Sebastian." I remarked with a soft glare. Instead of replying, he simply looked off to the side, licking his lips as his eyes finally left my gaze.

"Sweets?" Soma repeated, looking at the two of us in confusion. "Yes, I had picked up a black and purple cupcake from this table right here." I pointed to the table behind us where the cupcake was grabbed from. Soma's eyes widened slightly and his voice shook as he spoke. "That was no regular cupcake..." He began, his eyes darting across my face.

"Is everything alright, My Prince?" Agni came up to ask. Soma quickly turned to Agni, his expression worsening. "What were those cupcakes made of?" Soma inquired, gripping Agni's collar. "Souls." Sebastian's voice rang behind me. I turned to him, noticing his eyes. "So you did eat it!" I whisper-shouted. I shook my head in disappointment and grabbed Sebastian's wrist.

"Sebastian seems a bit tired, allow me to take him to his bedroom." I pulled Sebastian behind me as I walked off. 'Making a cupcake with souls in it? How does one even do that? Is the power of Kali that strong? Hopefully they'll forget about it...' I turned to Sebastian whose eyes still glowed. "How many souls were in that cupcake, Sebastian?" He didn't answer. He looked as if he was in a daze, his eyes still a bright pink.

I rushed to my bedroom and pushed Sebastian into it, closing the door after walking in behind him. "Sebastian, this isn't the right time!" I packed back and forth in a panicked state. My first time in Bengal and nothing goes right. I turned to Sebastian once again, hoping he would snap out of his daze. Thankfully, he did!

He looked around my temporary bedroom in confusion then at me. "When did I get here?" He asked. "You ate my cupcake that apparently had souls in it and you went into some dazed state." I groaned, crossing my arms and poking my hip out slightly. "Those souls weren't just regular souls. Those souls were from the early 13th century, some of the richest souls known to demon kind." He began.

"And there was one... that felt all too familiar." Sebastian's eyes flickered with that same hint of vulnerability I saw earlier. Just what are you hiding from me, Sebastian?
