The sun was setting over the beach, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Darrian stood at the edge of the water, his feet sinking into the sand as the waves rolled in. The evening air was warm, but he still felt a little chill, maybe because of everything swirling in his head.

"Darrian," a voice called from behind. He turned to see David walking toward him, his hands shoved in his pockets, looking as if he had something on his mind too.

"Hey," Darrian said, trying to sound casual, though his heart was racing. He always felt that way around David. It was frustrating, but also... it was David.

"Couldn't sleep," David said, stopping beside him. "Thought I might find you out here."

Darrian nodded. "Yeah. I just needed to think."

David looked at him, his expression serious. "You've been quiet lately."

Darrian shrugged, looking out at the ocean again. "I guess I've had a lot on my mind. This summer... it feels different."

"Yeah," David agreed, "it does."

They both knew what he meant. The tension between them had been there all summer, and now it was impossible to ignore. Darrian didn't know what to do about it, but he knew he couldn't keep pretending everything was the same.

"I don't want to lose you, David," Darrian blurted out, the words spilling out before he could stop them. He turned to face him, his heart pounding. "But I don't think we can go back to how things were."

David didn't say anything for a moment, just looked at him, really looked at him, like he was trying to figure out something important. Then, he stepped closer, reaching out to brush a stray hair from Darrian's face.

"Darrian, I don't want to go back either," David said softly, his hand lingering on Darrian's cheek. "I can't pretend you're just my friend. You're always on my mind."

Darrian's breath caught, a mix of fear and hope. "David, I..."

David shook his head, cutting him off gently. "You don't have to say anything," he whispered. "Just... let me hold you."

Darrian nodded, leaning into David's embrace. Everything else faded away as David's arms wrapped around him, making him feel safe in a way he hadn't felt in a long time. They stayed like that for a while, just holding on to each other as the waves crashed softly at their feet.

Finally, David pulled back just enough to look into Darrian's eyes. "I think I'm in love with you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Darrian felt tears prick at his eyes, but he smiled anyway, reaching up to cup David's face. "I love you too, David. I always have."

David smiled, a real, genuine smile, and leaned in to kiss him. It was soft and sweet, the kind of kiss that felt like a promise, like everything was finally going to be okay.

When they pulled apart, Darrian couldn't stop smiling. "We'll figure this out," David said, his forehead resting against Darrian's. "One step at a time."

"Yeah," Darrian agreed, feeling lighter than he had in a long time. "One step at a time."

And as they stood there, the ocean stretching out before them and the stars just beginning to peek out, Darrian knew that whatever happened next, they'd be okay-together.
