It had been a whole year since David and Darrian had gone on a proper date, a whole year since their twins were born, and life had been a beautiful, exhausting blur. But tonight was different. Tonight, for the first time, they were going out—just the two of them.

David's mom greeted them at the door with a warm smile as they arrived to drop off the twins. Darrian, with the diaper bag slung over his shoulder, was jittery, bouncing on his feet as he handed one of the babies over to her.

"Okay, so, you've got the formula, right?" Darrian asked, shifting nervously. "And their wipes? Powder? The pacifiers are in the side pocket. Oh, and the blankets—make sure they're not too cold, but not too warm either! You know how they get if—"

"Darrian." David's voice was soft but firm, a hand resting gently on his husband's shoulder. "Mom's got this. You know she's raised me, right?" He gave his mother a wink, who chuckled.

David's mom waved off Darrian's worry with a warm laugh. "Sweetheart, relax. I've got everything under control. You two deserve a night out."

Darrian nodded, taking a deep breath, though he was still fidgeting. He glanced at the babies, their tiny faces resting peacefully. The thought of leaving them for a few hours felt both exciting and terrifying.

David smiled, taking one of the twins in his arms and kissing the baby's forehead. "We'll be back soon, little one. Be good for grandma."

Darrian followed suit, though he kissed both babies four times each, his eyes filled with warmth and a touch of reluctance. "I love you both so, so much," he whispered before finally turning to David. "Okay, I'm ready."

David wrapped an arm around Darrian's waist, guiding him out the door. "See? They're in good hands."

As they drove to the restaurant, Darrian's nervous energy slowly melted away. By the time they were seated and enjoying a glass of wine, he felt lighter, like he could finally breathe.

"This feels strange, doesn't it?" Darrian laughed, glancing at the menu. "Sitting here...without baby bottles and diaper changes."

David chuckled, reaching across the table to hold Darrian's hand. "Yeah, but we've earned it. And you know what? I've missed this—just us."

The night passed smoothly, the food delicious and the conversation filled with love and laughter. They reminisced about their pre-baby life but also celebrated the joy their twins had brought into their world. They laughed about the sleepless nights, the countless diaper changes, and the little moments of peace they found in between.

On the drive back to David's mom's house, Darrian was practically bouncing in his seat, his excitement to see the twins bubbling over. "Do you think they missed us?"

David smirked. "They were probably asleep most of the time."

When they pulled into the driveway, Darrian didn't wait for David to turn off the car before he hurried out and ran inside. David's mom was in the living room, a smile on her face as she nodded toward the play area where the twins were.

The moment Darrian saw them, his heart melted. The twins were wide awake, playing with their soft toys, their tiny faces lighting up when they saw him.

Darrian dropped to his knees beside them, his voice softening into the baby talk they both loved so much. "My babies! Did you miss Mommy? Ohhh, I missed you so much!" He covered them in kisses, one after the other, breathing in that sweet baby scent he adored.

David walked in, smiling at the sight of Darrian cuddling the twins. "Looks like someone's happy to be home."

Darrian glanced up, his eyes shining. "I couldn't wait. I love our date nights, but I think I love them more." He hugged the twins close again, feeling their tiny hands curl around his fingers.

David knelt beside them, kissing both babies on the head before placing a hand on Darrian's lower back. "I love both. You, them, all of it."

And in that moment, everything felt right. A night away was special, but coming home was even better.
