The thumping bass of the beach party felt like a heartbeat, pounding in David's chest as he stood on the fringes, staring out at the bonfire. People laughed, danced, and passed drinks around, their joy echoing over the sound of crashing waves. It should've felt freeing—this was the life he'd always wanted, wasn't it? Parties, freedom, no strings attached.
But all David felt was hollow.
He swirled the drink in his hand, the firelight reflecting in the amber liquid. His mind kept drifting, like it always did, to Darrian. It had been years since that night—the night he'd told Darrian he needed space, needed to "live life." The way Darrian had looked at him, his usually vibrant eyes dimming with heartbreak, haunted him more than he cared to admit.
"I hope you find what you're looking for," Darrian had said quietly before walking away, his voice breaking with every word.
And now, years later, here David was, standing in the middle of the life he thought he wanted, only to realize he'd left his heart behind.
"David!" someone called, snapping him out of his thoughts. A girl stumbled toward him, laughing and pulling him toward the fire. He pulled away gently, muttering an excuse she didn't care enough to listen to.
He couldn't do this anymore.
The realization hit him like a wave. He didn't want this life—the endless parties, the empty connections. He wanted Darrian.
Without thinking, David dropped his drink into the sand and took off running. The cool night air stung his skin as he sprinted down the boardwalk toward the neighborhood they used to call home. His heart pounded, but this time, it wasn't from the music or the alcohol—it was from desperation.
Darrian's house came into view, and David's breath hitched. The driveway was full of boxes, his dad's car idling at the curb as Darrian loaded the last bag into the trunk.
"No," David whispered, his legs moving faster than his mind.
"Darrian!" he shouted, his voice cracking in the still night.
Darrian froze, his back to David, before turning slowly. His face was unreadable, his eyes meeting David's for the first time in years.
"David?" he said, his voice a mix of confusion and something else—maybe disbelief.
David skidded to a stop a few feet away, panting. "What's... what's going on?" he asked, though the answer was clear.
Darrian gestured to the packed car. "What does it look like? I'm leaving."
David's heart sank. "Leaving? Why? Where are you going?"
Darrian crossed his arms, his expression cold. "Why do you care? You didn't care when you left me to go 'live life,' did you?"
The words hit like a punch to the gut, but David couldn't argue. "I made a mistake," he admitted, his voice trembling. "I thought I needed something else, but I was wrong. Darrian, I need you. I always have."
Darrian's lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes glistening under the streetlights. "You don't get to do this," he said, his voice breaking. "You don't get to show up when I'm finally moving on and say you need me. Where were you when I needed you, David?"
David took a step closer. "I'm here now. Please, just give me a chance—"
"No," Darrian cut him off, shaking his head. "I gave you everything, and you threw it away. I'm done waiting for you to figure out what you want."
Darrian's dad honked the horn, signaling it was time to go. Darrian turned without another word, climbing into the passenger seat and shutting the door.
"Darrian, wait!" David shouted, running toward the car as it started to pull away. He sprinted after it, his legs burning as the taillights grew smaller and smaller.
"Please!" he cried, his voice cracking with emotion. But the car didn't stop.
David's lungs burned, his legs giving out as he collapsed onto the pavement. The sound of the engine faded into the distance, leaving him alone under the streetlights.
He pressed his forehead to the ground, his chest heaving as the reality sank in. This was the end. He had let Darrian slip away, and now, there was no going back.
The silence was deafening, the world suddenly too quiet without Darrian in it.
And for the first time, David truly understood what heartbreak felt like.
