The following evening, Imani arrived at the café a little early. It was a small, cozy spot on a quiet street, far from the bustling parts of the city. The dim lighting and soft jazz playing in the background created a calming atmosphere, exactly what she needed for this conversation. She chose a table in the corner, tucked away from the few other people who were there.

As she waited for Trent, Imani's mind raced. She had spent the entire day thinking about what she wanted to say, rehearsing her words, but now that the moment was almost here, her thoughts were a jumble. She knew what she wanted—to be with Trent, but in a way that felt right for her. The last few months had been so chaotic, and she couldn't afford any more drama.

The bell above the door chimed, pulling her from her thoughts. Trent walked in, scanning the room until his eyes found her. He smiled—a soft, familiar smile that made her heart skip a beat. Imani waved him over, feeling a mix of anticipation and anxiety.

"Hey," Trent said as he approached the table, his voice warm. He pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. "You look great."

"Thanks," Imani replied, her voice steadying as she took a deep breath. "You too."

They ordered coffee, and for a few moments, they made small talk about work and the city. But Imani could sense that Trent was also aware of the unspoken tension between them. He seemed patient, though, waiting for her to bring up what she had hinted at in her message.

Finally, after a pause in the conversation, Imani knew it was time. She looked directly at Trent, meeting his gaze with a seriousness that made him lean in slightly.

"Trent," she began, her voice quiet but firm. "I asked you to meet because there's something important I need to talk about. About us."

He nodded, his expression attentive. "I'm listening."

Imani took a moment to gather her thoughts. "The last few months have been a lot—so much has happened, and I've been trying to figure out what I really want. I've realized that I care about you, but I also need to protect my peace. I can't go back to the way things were before."

Trent's brow furrowed slightly, but he stayed silent, giving her the space to continue.

"I want to be with you," she said, the words feeling right as they left her lips. "But I need it to be different this time. I want to keep things low-key, away from all the drama and complications. Just you and me, focusing on what's important without everyone else getting involved."

Trent took in her words, his eyes searching hers for a moment. He leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly. "I get it, Imani," he said finally. "I really do. Things got out of hand before, and I don't want that for us either. If being low-key is what you need, then I'm all for it."

Imani felt a wave of relief wash over her. "Really?"

"Yeah," Trent said, his voice steady. "What we have—it's special. And if keeping it between us means we can avoid all the chaos, then that's what we'll do. I'm with you, Imani, all the way."

She smiled, the tension in her chest easing. "Thank you, Trent. That means a lot."

They sat in silence for a moment, both taking in the gravity of what they had just agreed to. The air between them felt lighter now, the path ahead a bit clearer.

"So," Trent said, breaking the silence with a small grin. "How about we start by actually enjoying this coffee without any drama?"

Imani laughed, the sound genuine and free. "That sounds perfect."

As they sipped their coffee, the conversation flowed easily, like it always had when things were good between them. They talked about everything and nothing—future plans, favorite movies, even their shared love for the jazz playing in the background. The past few months felt like a distant memory, and for the first time in a long while, Imani felt hopeful.

This was a new beginning for them, and it was exactly what she needed. Low-key, drama-free, and grounded in something real. As they left the café together, Imani knew that whatever challenges came their way, she and Trent could face them—quietly, but together.
